Maybe we need to start another - what are your winter mods thread?
I'll start -
Just pulled the WC T5 out of my '91 Z- full rebuild just finished - quite a mess - I will post pics of the carnage - input shaft was gone, had to replace a gear cluster, etc etc.... I picked up the counter gear retainer upgrade from 5speeds.com - and installed it along with a full rebuild kit, new main shaft etc. Hard to believe that it still worked after a full two seasons behind my 355 Getting hard to find new OEM parts for the WC T5's.
Next three projects include droping the tank to instal a new fuel pump,
and some upper end motor work - porting out a set of 305cid vortec heads, new roller (not sure what to get yet) and manifold, (looking for a used Edelbrock RPM performer or air gap... drilled for vortec bolt pattern)
and
installing a rear trunk sealed bat box.
Lot to do to keep busy. Hope to have the car ready for the '07 solo sprint season and open track days.

Hey Andrew,

Glad to see you got the T5 rebuilt, did you do it yourself or have someone do it? if so where?
Good move on rebuilding, you should be good to go for quite sometime, that one was 15 years old and behind an ugraded engine!!

The input shaft looked bad! It was hard to tell where the problem was on the cluster/counter shaft.

I picked up a WC spare with a cracked tail housing. It has a couple of small spots on the input shaft but the rest is good. It is out of a 91 F body.

I have a another spare WC for parts. The tail housing is good and the case is good. The typical 3rd gear blow out. But, it is good to have for small parts. I'll get a rebuild kit, bearings and synchros and replace what needs to be and for around $500 i'll have a rebuilt spare trans.

I am also building up a spare 9 bolt diff with 3.70 gears with PBRs to match the 3.45 in my car. Then I can swap rear ends depending on the track I am running at.

I am looking for some one or place to do some light machining for me. I need the cones in the 9 bolt machined and a jig made up (real easy- a aluminum cylinder with 1 step) for installing the 2 piece seal adpapters on 1 piece blocks.

take care
Steve

I will try to get a few better ones It's tough tho. The light reflects off the gears, too bright and then too dim, shadows

Steve,
If you remember, I was deliberating between Strudwicks and a good friend (Paul Speir - he has a shop in Etobicoke (416-236-8261) and does a lot of good work for all types of cars). I ended up going with him as he is a lot closer and has done great work for me in the past. I don't have all the necessary tools to pull the trans apart either so it was better done by someone who does them all the time. This all said, I still want to visit Strudwicks.
I ended up having to buy a new input shaft - teeth were missing - got a deal for a North American made NEW shaft. I was told that most of the new parts (New OEM North American made parts that is) come treated to make them harder - not sure if this is or not, but I am no metallurgist. I didn't want to buy any of the expensive upgrade components from G-force or Astro because in the end it would have been cheaper to just buy a new Tremec series trans. On the cluseter, the gears were very worn down and or scored so bad that I had to replace it. Any significant use (ie track time) would have done it in.....Last pic is of a synchro - or what was left of one
The counter gear retainer from 5speeds.com was/is (look here http://www.5speeds.com/t5.htm IMO, a nice and affordable upgrade for the type of application (road race) we intend to subject the trans to.

It seems that good quality parts for World Class T5's are harder to find than the older T5's - any one else experience this?

Oh yah, one other thing Steve - I ended up going up to CSC up in Newmarket - great bunch to talk to. Nice facility as well. I got an informal tour - they can fab up some mean machines! Picked up a nice Bell helmet through them. For anyone else who needs safety equipment - CSC knows their stuff. I can't begin to explain the misinformation I got regardind SA designated hemlets from other dealers! Thanks for all your leads and help.
I'll stop typing now......
-Andrew

Cool! I agree on the HD bearing retainers for the cluster gear shaft. I am going to order 2 of them and ugrade both of my T5s.

The spare T5 I have is in good shape, all gears and cluster shaft are in good shape, only 4th gear has a couple of small spots on them. Of course to replace thei means to replace the input shaft . Even the synchros look OK. but for the price of a complete rebuild kit for these I will just go through the entire transmission.

Glad you liked CSC, Jennifer takes car of us good!! They are a big sponsor for CASC as well as the stock car crowd. Nice people!

I also just picked up a Fidanza aluminum flywheel and Lakewood scattershield that I will put on in the spring.

time to go and get the rear end housing sandblasted and soem machine work done.

Regards
Steve

Maybe see you at the track this year if I get my car sorted. As it is right now it needs a lot of stuff replaced including the diff. I havn't decided whether to rebuild the 10 bolt or not.

I've been meaning to do a 5 speed swap for a few years now but there's always something else that needs done. I was holding out for a Tremec with the road race 5th gear ratio in it but they were around $1,800 US last time I looked.

As you probably already know, CSC usually has some kind of sale over the winter at one of the registration days for Solo 1.

Steve,
Not sure if you're still looking for a machine shop or not...
I used to use Viper Precision; [Address : 760 Hardwick, ON
Telephone : 905-453-3136] back when I working in TO (at ArvinMeritor) and we were doing prototyping for shocks etc.
The owner's name is John. They are a general machine and CNC operation and are the best for price and quality around, and are in your neck of the woods. Really great guys. I am sure they can set you up, even for a small job.

You could likely also get those cones ground by a shop that does flywheel resurfacing...it's just surface grinding a really small diameter clutch.

If anyone ever needs aluminum welding, use CG Alloy Weld in TO at the 400 and 7. They welded my T56 tailshaft and did perfect work.
