rim refinishing

Anyone have any experience with shops in the GTA (more or less) that refinish IROC rims?
I'm interested in the full monty. Stripped, machined, painted and clear coated.
Thanks.

They do a good job, just don't let them mount your tires, all four of mine leaked air.

Re: rim refinishing

You can do it yourself with aircraft stripper , very fine steel wool and polish. I didn't clear mine after this process and they are still shining after 4 years.

I used to deal with Carcones, sold and delivered them the PPG paint they used for 2 yrs... They have a formula down pat, they oven bake the wheels, do a fantastic job. I'm curious to see the polished job that Wraith has done, tho! Please post some pictures! I have one wheel that is pitted to an extent, would like to either polish them up or replace them with some already polished 18" replica IROC wheels. If the home polish turned out nice, tho...I'd definitely give it a shot!

Re: rim refinishing

Any details?
Were they done by Union Rim?
Is the aluminum finish polished or clear coated?

Re: rim refinishing

They were done by Carcones in Aurora. they weresent to a polisher and then brought back and clear coated then baked in the oven. They look totally awesome. Very happy with the results. If you do choose them, make sure that you tell them you want them polished, otherwise they will machine them, buff and then clear.

Had mine done at Carcones for the IROC .
Had curb rash and clear coat peeling bad.
This is the finished product.

Re: rim refinishing

Seems Carcones is the place.
No one has used Union Rim? (They have a nice web site!)
For those that used Carcones, what were the costs?

Re: rim refinishing

I did mine in my garage, granted i couldnt get the curb rash out but after some elbow greese and some paint they turned out sweet. Didnt want it too polished but just enough to give it some stand out against the grey paint colour.

Wire brush and alot of elbow grease. I have another set here Im working on as and extra set for mine and they are coming out amazing as well. Even a fine thread wire wheel on a drill will work as well or even a dremel as I use both of those to finish it up and for tight areas.

[quote=6SIX6;4543554]Wire brush and alot of elbow grease.

So you taped off the painted part <inner area of rim> and brushed off the clearcoated part?

I was considering stripping mine off, then polishing the area that was once cleared to remove some pitting. I was not going to clear them afterwards, just polish.....anyone do this or wanna show pics of fully polished IROC-Z rims...not RS rims?? Was also thinking I might just strip/polish the entire wheel. I have lots of time. :P

I repainted the inner parts of the rim after. i used to have completely polished iroc wheels on my car but didnt care for the look at all. This is the only pic i have with them on the car and it isnt that good really but it gives you an idea

Re: rim refinishing

I'll say that I prefer the IROC rims with the painted inserts.
If the bare aluminum is clear coated seems to be a matter of whether or not you want to polish your rims as regular maintenace.

Thats the exact reason i went and got another set and painted them as i have no time to sit and polish rims every week or so

I got mine done at Wheelcovers Unlimited in Windsor, they do the same kind of thing with turning them down on a CNC, new paint, clearcoat.. 16" Formula WS6 wheels..

Re: rim refinishing

TPI383 did this: I did my stock rims back in the mid 90's when I got the car. polish em and keep a coat of wax on em. I retouched em up a few years ago and someone on here has em now.

anyways

Start with 120grit. work your way upto 400 or 800.
Then use some TRIPOLI to to buff it to a good shine and work out any polishing lines left. For the Final BUFF/COLOR I use WHITE ROUGE.

This is how they come out

http://funkyimg.com/viewer.php?img=/...olishedRim.jpg

Polished aluminum looks sooo nice when done properly...It's not like you have to polish them every week or anything!

Re: rim refinishing

I had no clear when I redid my rims and polished them maybe once or twice a season. Even that wasn't necessary and my car was driven daily and beat on all the time. The shine also outdoes any clear coated look out there. You can make them like chrome without clear.

I'd say I agree with you. I like the look of polished rims however buffing them even a couple of times a season is too much for maintenance for me.
I'd rather be driving or wrenching or racing.

Re: rim refinishing

To get an even deeper shine after mothers polish. Go and get a aluminium polishing kit with polishing block (white bar). It comes with attachments for a drill this will bring out a chrome like finish.
