5.0 or 5.7 ???? -- 86 IROC
5.0 or 5.7 ???? -- 86 IROC
Hi to all the members, a quick question here. I just purchased an 86 IROC from a dealer. They told me it had a 5.7 L TPI. Upon checking the Vin # it says its a 305 LB9. I dont think the motor has been changed, but because its an IROC, is it possible its a 5.7 and not a 5.0 ??? or is the Vin tag correct???

The 5.7L was not available from GM in the 1986 IROC's. The first year for the 5.7L was 1987. If the dealership mislead you, they're in trouble. Take it to a dealership and have them verify that it's a 305 or 350. Thier is a few things that you can use to identify them externally.

Many dealers thought that some IROC's got 5.7's out of Corvettes when they were new. This is because the new 5.0's were so quick. But yours is most likely a 5.0.
If this dealer won't give you some refund $$$ based on misrepresenting the engine, try contacting:
http://www.ucda.ca/
and the Ontario Ministry of Consumer and Commercial relations.
To be legitimate- I would think a reasonable dealer would give you a few $$$'s back because of this. Also, forget the VIN #, check the casting number on the block to verify its size. Also- does it have TPI or or TBI on it? The LB9 is a TBI engine.
Bigger issue- if this was mis-represented, what else was as well (assuming the dealer is either somewhat incompetent or outright crooked)?

Hey John, I was talking to Irocker at Performance World, and he told me the same thing, that the 5.7 wasn't available in 1986 Irocs. I would definitely check it out with the dealer. It's also possible that the engine was swapped out at some point, after all it's 16 years old.
Sorry I couldn't go there with you to check it out. Let me know what they say.
BTW you missed a great car show.
See ya at Ozzy, maybe.

Sometimes dealers can be so stupid, sometiems this is good, and sometimes bad. They probably have no idea about TPI, they probably thought it was a 5.7L just because it had TPI... Heck, I would have thought that when I was 8
I wouldn't worry about it though, they're still fun to drive.
Did you take it for a test drive? Is it stick, or auto?
Yeah, too bad you weren't at the car show, some sweet cars there, and a lack of discustangs were there too... nothing wrong with that
PS. Burnouts are fun

Ebytowne Motors, was the dealer i bought it from. I figured they would have some knowlegde of the car. Seeing as they sell Vipers, Vettes, and any other High priced sports cars.
I did take the car for a bit of a tour, Seems to have lots of power, I never really let it go, as when i did a lil bit seemed there were heads turning everywhere, so i figure ill wait til its all mine
Double Burnouts huh Kev, ID guarantee we be in Deep CACA
BTW, its a 4sp auto
