Help me. Formula died twice tonight
OK I am cruising back from WalMart with a friend on the Loop around lubbock. I'm doing about 70 mph and the SES lights starts flashing and I notice the car is stuttering. Like sudden gains and losses in power. It shakes a little so I put hte car in neutral to coast it off the Loop, and the motor dies. I had plenty of power, no accessories were turning on and off or anything.
While I am coasting I try to turn the car back on, but all that happens is the starter turns but the motor wont fire. So I give up on that after a few tries and coast off into a parkinglot. I turn everything off and get out and open the hood. It looks normal, everything that I immediately saw was connected correctly. I checked the battery wires and they were fine. I got back in the car and tried to start it, and it started with no problem.
So I got it back out on the road, a regular street back to the university. My friend and I stopped at DQ and got some food and went on our way. Back out on the road it started stuttering and flashing about 4-5 miles down after we left from DQ. At 40 mph you could really feel it gaining and losing power. I tried putting it in different gears, and in 2nd, D, and OD it did the same thing. A lot like when you blip the throttle just for a second in low gear. That SOTP feeling and a quick release. Except a lot of them. Also my friend and I noticed a strange smell. Kind of like a mix between bad emissions and oil and gas. It was weird.
I stopped in a turn lane that goes into the University at a red light and it died there. It once again wouldnt start. I sat for a about two minutes and tried again. Started right up. I drove it to the parkinglot where it is sitting now.
Codes are 14, 32 (had that for awhile, ive replaced the valve and solenoid...nothing happens i just get the SES light on the highway) and code 43.
Any ideas?

I'd say it could your fuel pump.
My car started doing that last year, it would shut off out of nowhere (going slow, fast, high rev, low rev). Was hard to start at times (i guess cause the filter was plugged) and then later it fire up with no problem what soever.
Try that, hope it works.
Good luck

What happens is the pump get a few minutes too cool of and will satart working again. Check the pressure when you're having the problem. A gauge is only like 25 bucks at Autozone and is much better that us trying to trouble shoot from 1000 miles away. Let us know what you find.
Sounds like my problem, exactly the same thing. Although my problem has progressed even more now but that is how it started. My scan tool shows voltage to the FP and the filter is new. Fuel Pressure does not fluctuate with a gauge hooked up when problem occurs. Hate to change the FP and have the car still do it. I get a code 33 once in a while. If you change your FP and it helps please let us know. Right now i am leaning towards a new MAF.
Code 14 = Coolant Temperature Circuit (Probably bad sensor, Shorted wire, or Bad ECM)
Code 32 = EGR, and probably unrelated to so drastic a problem.
Code 43 = Electronic SPark Control (Faulty ESC module, or Faulty knock sensor, or faulty ECM as well as possible wiring problems)
I would replace the Coolant Temp Sensor (Cheap), and the ESC module. The CTS can cause all sorts of problems if bad. Change fuel filter. Check MAF ducting for leaks, ignition timing, vacuum lines for kinks or leaks, and check conditions of plugs, wires, cap, and rotor...as well as fuel pressure during the existing condition if possible. Also try full throttle acceleration to clear some sh*t out...though that might not be a good idea. How many miles on car?

If you don't have a fuel pressure guage I can stop by sometime and we can check it real quick.
If you need a place to work on your car, my roommates and I have plenty of tools and a place to do it at if you would like. I know how it is being in the dorms.

I would definatley shoot for ESC module. If not that, check your fuel pressure, but the problems your having are common for a bad ESC.

check the ignition system... I would focous on the pick up coil... possibly ignition module... being intermitent it might be hard to diag... check what everyone else said too...
