Possible injector failure?

Hello,

I have been chasing this problem for over a year and have not made any success. My car takes like 8-10 turns of the motor to start. I have done alot so far to try and cure this, recently installed a new IAC with no better results. Other things I have done, good and complete tune up, new fuel pump, sending untit, cleaned throttle body, played with timing, etc. I was talking to a friend of mine who owns a shop and he said it might possibly be a failing fuel injector. My car has over 140K miles, its an all stock TPI setup. I had thought about buying a Crane HI-6 ignition setup with the LX-92 coil but from what I have been told, that may not help either. Does anyone have any ideas? If I went to new injectors, could I go from my stock 19lb'ers to 22lbs? Has anyone bought injectors off of ebay? I see a guy who sells pull offs from new C-5's and SS's.

I bought a set of 19# FMS injectors off e-bay for $28.00 total with 30,000 miles on them. Read a bit before buying them and wouldn't recommend going to a higher flow without significant mods and an AFPR. You can see the injectors on my webpage. Good Luck!!

If it starts better cold than warm is't likely a leaking injector.

I had hard problem on the L98 in my '88 Vette. Rich at Cruzin Performance just finished reconditioning the set of 9 injecotors and said that several were a little leaky, which accounts for my hard start when warm. $103.51 gets the set back to my door.

My LB9 has 19lb injcetors but I thought the F-body L98s had 22lb injecotors like the Vette L98s.

Actually, I think your problems are injector related. Either a few are leaky or starting to fail. I would replace them or at least have them checked. Also, a simple test is to check the resistance both warm and cold with an ohm meter. They all need to match resistance (closely anyway...not exact).

Good luck.

try reading your plugs. put some new ones in, start it up, let run shut down cool off and compare the plugs?

Here is a copy and paste of everything I have done so far to date.

History of what has been done so far and results:
New parts last week:
New plugs - AC Delco Rapidfires #2 When I pulled the old plugs I discovered they where way too hot, they where white at the tips.
Wires - Crane Cams 8.5mm race wires
Cap and Rotor - AC Delco
New AC Delco Coil
Set base timing to 6 degrees, had it at 10 and 8 with no change, stuck with factory setting for now.

New fuel tank sending unit - 1 month ago
Fuel pump that was used was less than 9 months old
All 3 relays on the firewall have been replaced around 9 months ago.
New MAF - 9 months ago
New AC Delco IAC 2 months ago.

The car runs really strong but I have had 2 instances where I have been slowing down and the car will cut out. If i put it in neutral and tap the gas, it will recover. (I am not sure if this is related or not)

When I try to start I will let the fuel pump prime, turn key, after 15+ turns car struggles to start. I have tried turning key, letting motor turn over 4-5 times, turn key off, turn key on, let fuel pump prime again, sometimes this helps, sometimes not. I have tried pumping the pedal and keeping it to the floor, again, sometimes this helps, sometimes not.

I always use 93+ octane and every 3 or 4 months I will run a bottle of STP fuel system and injector cleaner.

I do not believe my ignition system is the problem. When the motor takes more than 10 turns I can smell gas if I have my windows down. My friend said it could possible be my fuel press. regulator or my injectors or both. I have not bought a fuel press. gauge yet because I am not sure what the factory rating even is. I have also been told it could be the cold start injector but I have this problem when the motor is cold or warm.

My car has around 150K miles on it. I have never encountered something like this on a FI engine. I hate to just keep throwing parts at this and it not actually help my problem. If anyone has run into this problem or can post suggestions of things to try please do so. I also have a digital camera if for some reason someone would like to see pictures of something. Thank you in advance.

It does not matter now if the car is cold or hot. I am going to try and test the ohms resistance of each injector sometime soon. I will post the results when I get them.

Email me privately...I have a few questions for you that would be easier to talk about over the phone...Just email me and I can call you to discuss...

Since you also have an 88, I may have some insight...

There might be something wrong with the cold start injector. There is a coolant sensor on the front of the intake manifold, it is the one that looks like it has a fuel injector connector on it. This is what tells the 9th injector to fire. Also check the fuse, I think it is labeled 'crank' in the fuse box. This is a simple on/off circuit that is not controlled by the computer so it wont set any codes either.

Isn't there some kind of check valve downline by the fuel pump? You could be losing pressure there if your injectors arn't leaking.
