stupid question

I am trying to adjust my TPS on my 89 tpi and I have read the article and can't figure out how. I have a multimeter and it has leads for it but what do I do with these? I tried running a wire from the top wire of the TPS to the top wire of the connector and one from one middle connector to the other and then reading across them but I got nothing. I know I am sounding stupid but I need some help. Thanks

Punch the positive lead into the wire, and the other to ground ( like the plenum) make sure nothing is blocking the throttle blades from resting at 0, then take your reading.
