which MEMCAL to run?
which MEMCAL to run?
I recently swapped an 88 350TPI with 24lb injectors into my 86 firebird. I noticed that the memcal is for an 89 GTA. I would like to get a factory memcal for the car but ran into a little snag. I have a 5spd tranny. Do I go with the memcal for a 350 auto or a 305 5spd? I would think that the 305 memcal would be alright being that the injectors are 24lb. The car also has an AFPR if this helps. I am aware of the cold start injector on the motor and know that the memcal needs to be for an 88. I would like to get into PROM burning but that is still a couple of months away and I just want a decent running MEMCAL till then that will give me a decent base when I start to learn the chip burning process. Thanks for the help

First you need to use a memcal for a 305/ 5 speed combo. There are many differences between auto and stick and its better to start with a manual memcal. Go with a 89 memcal and unplug the cold start injector, wont need it with a 89 memcal. The prom will need to be adjusted to match the larger injectors and for engine size. Read Traxion's intro to prom burning on the DIY Prom board. cheers, Bob
VATS
If I go with the 89 chip to aliminate the the cold start injector wont I also get the VATS option on the factory chip? My car doesnt have a Vats system now. I dont mind the cold start injector and all of its there. I want to get into PROM burning but it probably wont be to the begining of the year. I am in the military and am trying to get my finances straightened out from being deployed and I have to move (first months rent security deposit) due to my roommate getting married. The 24lb injectors are there beccause the stockers died and I couldnt afford the stockers. I want to put headers and an intake on here the second that I can afford them but for now I dont mind changing out the sparkplugs and O2 sensor as needed till I get it right. I also figure the I can adjust the fuel preasure a little to lean out the mixture. Thanks for the responce.

Then I would go with a 86 5.0 TPI/ 5speed memcal and keep the cold start. You can always burn the 89 image later once you have the burner, etc. cheers, Bob
Thanks for the help saturn5. I will go ahead and get the memcal in a couple of days when i am at the GM dealer, i got to take my roommates truck in anways. One last question though. Why the 86 memcal when the entire motor combo including computer is out of an 88?

The engine and ECM are the same from 86-89. My TPI is from a 88 GTA which had VATS, I beleive that the 86 memcal won't have it. cheers, Bob

Theres no 86 TPI 5-speed, so you wont find that kinda memcal. The 86 code is kinda lousy anyway. You can get an 87 or 88 chip, if you stay away from the 88 GTA chip you wont have VATS on the chip. No 87's have VATS. Its probably going to run a bit rich though with those injectors.

Thank ya guys sounds like an 87 MEMCAL then. I am not to worried about running rich. Well to much. O2 sensors are only $20 and plugs arnt that bad to change. I am really hoping to get into PROM burning by december. Do you think that adding headers will help lean it out like the old carb motors?
