305 heads question-performance
305 heads question-performance
what is the best head that you can buy for the money for a 305 , i want it to work well with TPI torque band, would it be worth my while to work over a set of stock 305 heads from an 86 lg4, i already have them. if so what size valves and such should i put in them? thanks

I ported my stock heads and have other mods similar to yours. The headers, head work and high flow cat were all done at once, so I don't know how much difference each makes, but I'm happy with the improvement. Feels the same up to about 3K rpm, then it comes on strong. I can't see $800 or $900 for aftermarket heads on an engine with so many other stock parts. That's my opinion. Anyone gonna rag on me for it?

so is there a difference between tpi 305 heads and carbed 305 heads. the lg4 heads are NOT on my car, they are on a parts car i have sitting in my woods. i was also wondering how well corvette aluminum heads would work on a 305 since they have 58cc combustion chambers, and they would also work on a 350. would these be good heads to invest in? or shoud i just port the ones i have?

The Corvette heads will work well on a 305 but a better performing head will be the 350 Vortec head. The Vortec head flows more air and has a better combustion chamber design then the Corvette head. The down side to the Vortec head is that you must buy the Vortec intake manifold from SDPC. I am running the Vortec heads on my well worn 305, and it is making approximately 300 HP.
BJANKUSI, those are some really nice numbers. That's exactly where I want my car to be in the future. What do you think the S/R's from World Products would yeild instead of the Vortecs. Also, is the ZZ4 cam a little too much for 305's? If ya had to do it again, would you stick with it? I heard that the 2032 from crane is also a good choice for 305tpi's.

I do not believe the S/R heads are as good as the Vortec heads or the Corvette heads. The ZZ-4 cam in my 305 idles fine and makes excellent power, if I was to do it again I would go with a bigger cam like the ZZ-9. The ZZ-4 cam idles at 750 RPM sounds good and pulls from 2000 RPM all the way to 5700 RPM, it is not too large for a 305. At 2000 RPM I already have 252 FT/LBS of torque at the rear tires and it peaks at 314 FT/LBS at 3800 RPM at the rear tires. The HP peak is 255 at the rear wheels at 4800 RPM, these are excellent street RPM bands. One other note is that the car pulls down 25 MPG on road trips with the air on. It is a good combination.
