Can someone check out this 383 setup?
My buddy Nate's 198,000 mile IROC finally bit the bullet so he going to rebuild it. He has a $4,000 budget and this is what I came up with. I dont know enough about tpi to say "This is what you need", so if you guys could just suggest different things or what not.
Bottom end:
Summit 383 rebuild kit (kb pistons, stage II rods, cast crank)
Cam:
CC306 (.544/.576 232/244) (used)
Heads:
AFR 190s (used)
or
Trickflow 23* (new)
Intake:
Stealth Ram
Stall:
Vig 2800
Rockers:
Summit 1.5 full roller
With the misc parts like pushrods, timing set, etc I came up with around $4100 before machine work, which I figure will cost another $300 to get hot tanked, bored, new freeze plugs, cam bearings, and the rods pressed to the pistons.
Is the cam too big? And the stall?
Thanks guys

I don't think the cam is too big. Is it a roller Cam? I don't have a price for it but have him check out the GM Performance Parts "HOT" Cam...Chevy High Performance is having outstanding results with it on their Twister 383 and they are using Vortec Heads with stiff springs...I have the artical and can give you thier spring rates and stuff if you want em.

Plan on about 1000 at the machine shop, Youll need the block clearanced as well and the rods clearanced to not hit the cam. If you get it balanced that is additional too, then assembly if you have them do it.

I got my block hot tanked, honed, crank hot tanked, checked, polished, and a few other misc things (cam bearings, freeze plugs, few other things tanked) and it was $230. We're going to assemble the bottom end ourselves since we both have expirence assembling bottom ends, hooray for plasigague!
I didnt know the block needed extra work, but the rods come with the rebuild kit so shouldnt they be fine?
Anyways, the Hot Cam was his other choice, but theres a guy selling a cc306 (roller - made for an lt1 but can be used in gen 1 blocks) with very low miles for cheap.
Im gonna be running a set of Vortecs on my 305 that were machiend with new springs for +.500 cam on my lil 305, but he really wants the AFRs or the trickflows since he wants the stealth ram.
Thanks for the replies guys!

More converter!!!! 2800 is kiddy stuff. I have 3000 behind my stock LB9 for christsakes. Seriously though, i'd run at least 32-3500 to get you thaty much closer to the real powerband. Don't be scared of a high stall vig.
I wouldn't run summit RRs either, valvetrain is not the place to pinch pennys on a motor that will spin over 6k with a healthy roller cam.
That cam should be nice. Probably need some good PROM tuning to dial it in, and would also like some mild head porting on either of those choices, but should be a nice cam in a 383, just enough lump to sound great without being overkill on the street.
Probably want to run at least 30lb injectors if not a little more.
And the odds of getting this done under $4k = || close to impossible
And don;t forget the cost of a tranny as well, i hope you don;t think the stocker has any prayer of dealing with all that new found power.

you can build a 383 for 4000 if ya choose the right stuff...
i'm in the process of my afr 500hp 383 and i don't think iv'e even hit 3 yet!!!
you can go to my site and see all the stuff thats going in it and add it up yourself....
the main thing is finding the quality stuff cheap!!!
i reccomend flatlander racing for carnks and rods....
total engine airflow for heads.....
and certain places for other parts....
if ya shop around i'm sure you can get what ya want for under 4000

This is what I want to hear! Thanks guys. The tranny was just rebuilt to handle 450-500 hp, so he's OK in that department. A 3500 stall sounds great.
We figured on 30# injectors and I should be getting the prom burning stuff in a few months, so this will give me a good dive into understanding TPI.
What do you recommend rocker wise? Im looking in my summit catalogue and I see the a set of Trickflow rockers, anyone have luck with those?
I want him to build this right the first time!

For rockers, you can never go wrong with Comp Cams Pro-Magnum rollers. Thunder Racing has a great price on them here.
I don't think that cam is too big. I'll be running a 236/242 112 lsa .555 int / .576 exh grind in my 396 with AFR 195's (which hopefully ships this week!)
