It can be done, they are out there. It all depends on what you describe as work. There are some out there with good bodys but the engines and interior are ragged out. There are some with great motors but may have some body damage, and there are some that are in good shape all the way around. If all you have is $2,000 - $2,500 I would concentrate on finding a car with a good motor, trans, and rear end. These are the most expensive parts of the car. 3rd Gen body parts can still be found in local salvage yards for decent prices. As far as the interior goes, $2,500 probably will not get you a good one. My opinion, for the money you have, find a car with a good drivetrain, and then save your money for an interior, maybe get some 4th gen seats since they are readily avail. and save your money for a good paint job if the car needs it. Just my 2 cents.
have you searched www.autotrader.com
i have found quite a few good deals on the internet. basically nice solid drivetrain and interior but needed paint and a fender or two.
my first car a 1988 iroc-z 5.7 i bought for 3,000 and only a few small things and it passes inspection, but the car had some dents and the paint started to fade.
my second car a 1988 formula 350 i bought for 1,950 and it needed only a few minor things to pass inspection and needed a new drivers fender and the paint was horrible it looked some some spray painted the whole car black, lol. anyway that car was fast even though it looked like crap.. 14.5's in the 1/4 mile..

I just got a real nice 85 IROC 305 TPI for $2,500
Only problems are that a fender needs replaced(someone ran a redlight and hit it at low speed) and the rear brake calipers need replaced.
The car looks like a million bucks. Paint is awesome and it runs like brand new. Interior is flawless.
The catch is that this car as stolen and stripped of its gfx, wheels, t-tops, wing, and interior in 1993. It had a salvage title until the owner finished restoring it in 1995... it now has a reconstructed title.
Theft recoveries can be a great deal, or a money pit. You really have to be careful with them. I decided this one was ok because the guy has been driving it for 7 years since the restoration with no problems at all. A test drive confirmed this car is mechanically perfect.
Found it on good old ebay

I got the deal of the year on this 87 IROC, factory 5.7, leather, bose, LOADED for $2000. No rust on it and it has not been on a frame machine, all sheet metal is original. My previos IROC was an 86 305 with rusted quarters that I paid $3500 for (about seven years ago)

I paid $1000 for this car. $300 later I was driving it. (radiator, new rotors, new brakes, odds-n-ends)
Wound up putting on an edelbrock catback (POS), accel intake, and slp runners. ported the plenum & had it running 13.9x when I sold it.

i bought my 87 350 tpi iroc for $1500 with a blown tranny. Body wise it had one dented fender, and original paint that was badly faded out. The interior was decent, but it was red.
I spend around a grand on a tranny rebuild, and it was a pretty decent car for around $2500.

i bought my 86 305 iroc for 2100. the guy just rebuilt the tranny and had a shift kit put in and had most of the sensors replaced and brand new tires. its got some at home bondo on it and a a dent in the front quater but thats it. the interior is perfect and it has an aftermarket steering wheel. i got a deal on mine so its not hard at all to find a deal.
thats kinda what i have ben hunting for is smehting with maybe a blown tranny or even no tranny. The engine on my current 88 camaro sc is trash but the body isn't worth it to drop in a new engine but i can pull the tranny out of it and put it into a car with a straight body and decent engine. I hate to have to send another third gen to the junk yard, but the body is just to rusty to drop in a new engine otherwise i would. So if ne one need some parts i will probably be parting it out soon it has a v8 305tbi interior is awesome the seats are all in great condition except for the drivers seat which has a rip. hey if u need something drop m an email we can work something for cheap. thanks for all your help guys!
