Performance chips??
Performance chips??
I was just thinkin about what else I could do to my car w/o touchin the heads cam. Has anyone used some after market chip?? Did it make any difference and track times to prove it. FYI I have an 89 350 IROC, stealth ram, rebuilt trans, cutout, 3.70.
Thanks

I have a hypertech stage 2 and I really couldn't tell any difference between it and my stock chip. I bought the car and the guy gave me the chip with it otherwise I wouldn't have wasted my money. I would suggest you check out the diy prom board. It would probably be worth your time to learn to burn your own chips. I'm going to start myself pretty soon and most people that do this say its a lot better than any off the shelf chip you could buy. I have heard good things about ed wright though.

From what I hear the guy you want to talk to is ed wright at fastchips. Do a search on the prom board to find out more. I think he's who everyone there recommends for a custom chip plus I think he offers 1 free reburn if the chips not close enough. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
If you really want good performance just learn to burn your own, if not buy an off the shelf and run a MAF so it can make up for any airflow differences. But id suggest learning to burn your own chips. You can build different chips for different uses: ie. highway chip, dragstrip chip, valet chip, around town chip etc. all for about $200 worth of equipment and a few hours of learning how to burn it.

Did you even read the PROM sticky on this board. Did the illustration of exactly how little you get when you buy an aftermarket chip not convince you it was a waste of money? Not too interested in burning your own? Why not, you can duplicate the CRAP you'd buy on your first pass and for the same or less money.
It's your money, waste it as you like. But make no mistake about it, buying an off the shelf chip is really only good for making your wallet lighter.

i have an ADS Superchip in mine right now. Not a big "seat of the pants" difference, but the track times showed it. Before the chip, i ran a 15.65 and the same day, i put the chip in just for kicks and my next run was a 15.20@99 with a little bit slower reaction time. Only way i could tell it made a difference b4 i ran it was b/c the motor had a little knock to it because the chip bumped the timing up a little bit. Good idea is to put in a 160* stat with the chip.

i have a hypertech i pulled out of my car to replace with a stock chip. i'd rather pay the $40 for the stock chip, then keep the hypertech in there. i personally cannot feel a performance difference where it matters but in daily driving the stocker is much better in so many ways.
Ed, why are you always so Cranky?
Burning your own chips is always the way to go. It will make all the mods work together better for you and will do exactly what YOU want it to do, not what the guys at hypertech want. But hey, i got mine for free so i can't complain. Still haven't decided if i like it or not yet.

I own the stock chip that came with the car in 1989, the newest revision of the stock chip frmo the dealer and the Hypertech Thermomaster.
Whcih chip of the three do I run? The newest revision of the stock chip all the way. The hypertech chip does nothing other than make your torque converter (if applicable) lock up about 4mph later and it will make your car ping like hell.
Want further proof that it does nothing?
Stock chip run: 14.3 @ 97
Hypertech run: 14.3 @ 97
Both runs were on the same day... no gains or loss... read as: nothing!
I only have mine because the previous owner bought it and sold it with the car. I am gonna erase my Hypertech and burn my own chips using it after the ZZ4 goes in.
