canfields are very good heads but rarely CHEAPER THAN AFR with similar flow numbers, look here, btw starting price = bare,no valves, springs ,etc.

AFR 195 heads are $1250 + $35 shipping from www.martelbros.com or direct from AFR. These are complete with 1.437 springs, retainers, guides, etc.

The heads are where you can make or break your motor. They are responsable for a majority of the power potential. DON'T SKIMP! Especially on a heavy breathing 383.

How long will it really take you to hold off and save an extra few hundred dollars to get a really good set of heads?

I'd hold off until you can affort to buy a set of heads that won't end up limiting your future power potential. Just my $0.02

save a little longer for the AFR's. If you have to get a set of heads that are cheap, look into the L98's and port them.

with a deep breathing 383, wouldn't you go with a head that has a little more breating room then 195cc? im just sayin, i know that a 383 will want a lot more air then a reg. 350... with the HSR.. i would go with somethin with 220cc... i dunno, im just puttin out an idea...

AFR 195's work pretty good but if your 383 has a really big cam and a revver, i would go with the AFR 210's. I think the 210's match nicely with a very healthy 383.

Big runners are nice, but ya got to look at the flow numbers. A big runner flows more air at high lift values, but if your cam doesn't have that much lift than what's the point? For example, I'm just built a 383, AFR 190's, and a Comp cam with 220/230@.050. Lift with 1.6RR's is .544 on both. Now, I looked on CHP's website and compared all the flow numbers. The 190/195 heads outflow all the other's to .500 lift and just barely get beat at .550. What's the point of giving up air down low if I can't use the extra air because my cam doesn't have the lift? Also the bigger runners lose airflow velocity which will hurt the bottom end, losing torque that you need to drive everyday. It's your money though.
