Do I have Speed Density or MAF???

I have an 86 Trans Am 305 with the perimeter style heads (don't know if this matters). How do I tell if it has MAF or speed density. I searched but could not find anything??? Could someone please give me some insight? Thanks a lot for any info. If I do have MAF how do I change over to speed density??

thanks a lot,
Dan

your sig says, "Air Gap Intake" wouldnt that be a carbeurated intake.

If its Carb'd you have neither.

If its TPI, in '86 they were MAF sensor.

To switch over you need a few things, I hate to say it but do a search, I dont know much about the subject and dont want to misguide you.

For once in going to Agree with 86fyrbird,

I do know about the subject, but im still going to tell you to do a search.

In 86 TPI was MAF. From the looks of your sig, I would wager you don't know what your doing at all.

Hey-
Well I should have been clearer. The car is an 86 Trans Am with at 305 TPI. The car in the sig is an 86 Z-28 w/ a peppy 355 that I have just completed. I should have made that clear. Thanks 86FyrBrd for informing me that it is a MAF, which is pretty much what I wanted to know. To Bort62: I would WAGER that you are an A$$ hole. To say that "I do not know what I am doing at all" is pretty ignorant, seeing that I am talking about two different cars. So let me get this straight carburation and fuel injection is different Bort62? I would WAGER that from now on you can stay the F*** out of my posts....OH, and I would also WAGER that
-=ICON MOTORSPORTS=- is motorsports for ignorant people such as yourself.

Thanks All,

Lets not be so harsh.
If you know you hava a carb, neither.
If you have TPI engine (the intake with 8 tubes), chances are it is a MAF judging by the year. Look for a black sensor in the intake tract towards the front of the car that is about 3" round. If you find it, bingo, MAF.
If you don't find it and there is a small black rectangular box right off passenger side rear of the plenum with a vac line going to it, that is a MAP sensor and you have SD.
If you can put up a pic, we can tell you for sure if you can't figure it out.

I would wager that he said what he said based on the fact that they both thought you were running a carb and asking about MAF vs. SD. I would wager that you need to lighten up. I would wager that you don't know a damn thing about ICON motorsports and I would wager that you would look damn foolish in a race against one of those "ignorant" ICON members. How about you calm down?

So...the guy who can't open his own hood and see if he has a MAF sensor is calling Bort and ICON ignorant?

Wow. This is so lame I don't even have my usual obligatory smartypants reply...

Your 86 TA is MAF. I too would suggest you do a search.

But, IMHO, from what I've read on these boards, you will not get any noticeable improvements by switching to sd.

maf will be fine as long you don't max out the maf. ie. serious engine mods. other than that, maf is very forgiving w/mods.

btw.. come on people we should fighting the true "ricers" and not our own. let's try and look some-what united in out efforts against the ricers.
