timing the TPI
timing the TPI
hi everyone. I took a TPI off a 91 camaro and put it in my '69 corvette. When I called up The chevy dealer on how to time it, they said disconnect the EST. Where is this EST? I don't seem to be able to time my this engine the same way as a normal chevy. can anyone tell me how to time their TPI engines? Or mabye suggest a good repair manual?thanks-

on a 3rd gen with that setup it is on the left of the engine bay if you are lookin at it from the front, it is a brown/tan wire with a quick connect fitting, just disconnect and set the timing per the rest of the instructions you were given.
hope this helps

On my car, granted it has a stock harness, that connector sticks out of the slit on one of the larger wire grommets (black plastic tube that protects and organizes the harness). All you can see is a wire coming out of the grommet, the connector (small, black, single lead), and it going back into the grommet. This all happens right above my heater fan right next to the fire wall (pass. side). Painless has their $hit together, so if it isn't there it should be somewhere else around there that is easily accesable. It has got to come out of the slit in the grommet, so maybe that is pointing away form your line of sight and hideing it? If you still can't find it I can get you a pick of mine, let me know.

Do you have a large cap or a small cap dizzy? If you have the large cap one, you can disconnect the big 4 wire harness that has it's wires leading into the base. Thats how you have to do it on the CCCS cars, no seperate EST connector to use.
And as sad as it sounds consideirng i have a small cap car now, i can't think of which harness you would pull to get the same effect, as already said, from the factory these cars came with a weatherpak on that wire to make it a little easier to find and do.
Are you sure there wasn't a quick disconect in the painless harness on a wire into the dizzy? Worst case, you need to find the appropriate wire and cut it yourself, then switch it or something for setting your timing.

The Painless harness will have the EST very near the area where the harness passes through the firewall (or connects to the computer if the excess wiring was pulled into the passenger compartment). It will be weather proof connertor and the wiring will be the same as the factory. You will take apart the connector and leave disconnected until you have the timing where you want it. You will then reconnect it.

I didn't have the time today to check but tomorrow I will check out the harness. A picture would help and I have a pretty good idea where the connector is now. I will let you know how it goes tommorow. I can't tell you how sweet my '69 vette looks with the TPI sticking out. I know I'm not a third gen-er but, I really apreciate the replies in the meantime, it helps me a lot. -
