replacing candy *** stock intake ducting

on my GTA i had a problem getting enough air in , i replaced the stock tiny rubber elbow with a 96 LT-1 piece (need the one w/o silencer) flipeed 180 deg then the MAF the i used two 4" mandrel 45 deg. pieces (requires alittle creativity, cuttining, & welding the 2 bends together) ground down the seam where i welded painted it semi-black slid a k&n for a turo diesel ram 3500 on the end and whala! only draw back for the purist out there is that i drilled out the spot welds and removed the lower apron panel where the the filter canister resided so the filter could drop down in there.

here my .02 i've got my maf housing to 73mm i.d. which is more than enough for me with out arguing the benefits of SD with 1/2 the members on this board or hacking up harness and burning 50 chips for nothing, but what was also killing me was small stock stuff the LT- 1 cars run large ducting with the same size maf +or- a few mm and can make great power with only adding a k&n FIPK (filter and hi-flow tube to maf)

with my old in stuff ( stock elbow >maf>3" pipe> cone filrter) my car made a hissing/sucking noise from the filter similar to project magnum.

I get that sucking/hissing noise also. I can hear it inside the car at idle. I used 3" plastic pvc tubing from ace hardware. Couldn't find anything in 4" that would fit between the radiator support and the a/c compressor.

You got some pics?

Replacing it with the 88-89 intake ducting with a K&N on the end would probably have been a lot easier and just as effective.

But... with an open element like that, you are going to hear a "sucking" noise that you don't hear with the stock enclosed air filter.

When I replaced that ducting on my 86 firebird, it had that hissing sound until I put the paper air filter back on. My friend's celica did it with his custom intake too.

That hissing sound means that the engine is sucking in plenty of air, do you really want to get rid of it?

I liked it (the hissing) when I put a cold air intake on my 91 3.1... but to each his own.

that hissing sound could also be equal to a track and feild athlete trying to breath through a cocktail straw.... get what i mean , also that set up i had on my GTA ,i slapped it on my 94z actually all i replaced was the the pipe section from MAF to filter i put the 2.75 I.D. aluminum pipe with cone filter on there, the car made a audible sucking sound the Z actually ran sluggish, so i put the OE front tube back on with a larger filter i had laying around and got my power back, with no noise either go figure. all i know is this with out the ducting in front of the MAF it runs good i put the **** on it hisses and stubles when i gun it. with the bigger tube i can flow enough air for the car next to me, it not even realy about that its volume i need , when i nail it that old tube couldnt move enough air through there fast enough to keep that big *** plenum full, small **** might work on the mild LTR motors that breath past 4700 any way. compare the intakes, thats what got me hot on putting on the LT-1 elbow and using the same size or slightly larger intake ducting, an lt-1 isnt much bigger that an L98 put everything lead to it and after is which odviously helps move a larger volume of air as i proved to myself in the above.

i post some pics soon
any suggestions with a iMAC
