TPIS, Fuel Injection Specialties, and Street & Performance will sell you a complete TPI rig.

As for the PROM question...steep learning curve ahead. The PROM holds the software that tells the ECM (computer) how to operate the engine's fuel/spark/emission systems and auto transmission's torque converter clutch.

wow i did not know that there was companies that just sold units with everything on it. i thought i would have to find a used one and recondition it. anyway its good news that i can buy the unit. my other question is that i bought my car for dirt cheap. all i know is that it is a chevy 350 block with a raodchester 4 bbl carb. for the tpi they want to know "Engine size and style heads (new/old) must be specified at time of purchase. Systems are available for all engine sizes. Injectors and components will be matched for engine specified."
how do i find out exaclty what i have under my hood?

You may not think it's that good a news when you find out the price. $3-4 grand for a complete unit from 1 of those companies.
i truly dont care as long as i can rip the engine out of my third gen and put it in my 67 nova after i get it restored. by the way that will problalby be ready after i get out of high school in two years...i constanlty trying ot find parts.

The TPI unit is freakin expensive if you don't already have it.
I don;t mean to veer off topic, but I think some good advice to offer at this point is to let you know there are Multi-Port systems (just like TPI) like the Stealth Ram, that'll cost the same, but don't come with the inherent weaknesses of Stock TPI.
Stock TPI is going to top out at about 5000rpm...
Any other aftermarket fuel injection (stealthram, superram, miniram, lt1) will rev much higher.

I got a complete TPI unit from a 1989 Irocz last week for just $200. It came with everything, ECU, wires, etc..
Guy swapped to a 406 & carb.

The only parts on a TPI that can conceivably wear out are the injectors and the throttle bodies. Injectors are easily replaced for $250. I have yet to hear about a throttle body wearing out, but even so it would be more cost effective to buy a used TPI and replace the injectors and throttle body then to buy a complete new setup.
The last TPI setup I bought was nearly complete. I needed to get a throttle cable, a kickdown cable, gaskets, and a wiring harness to make it complete. I spent $150 plus shipping.
A couple days cleaning and $40 at my dealership and its ready to go. I still have to modify the V6 harness and I have to find a distributor, but even after buying the 350, the tranny, and dropping it all in the car, I'll still have spent less than any of the aftermarket places charge for the TPI alone.

i see.
i have a carb on it right now.
would it be possible to do the conversion myself...or should i have a couple people help me?
i know a little about engines, but is there any good tech articles on the internet that could be of help to me?

Some of the best tech pages on the net are right here on this sight. Go to the bottom of the page and GO to tech-general engines.
if you are interested I buy these TPI units frome many places clean them up and I can do powdercoating polishing and porting most my stuff is used but it will cost you much less than a setup from a big shop if you want to install this your self and went with a aftermarket harness it would be quite simple as you will need no emissions on that year of car and the harness is labled so it is about idiot proof the only other thing that will require some work is the fuel system will have to be redone with high presure pump and a return line to the tank but this isn't a real big deal
what car doesnt need emissions? my 86 trans am needs emission controls. that is the car im putting it on most likely. when i get ready to do anyhting with the nova, itll probably be an injection system for an engine with 400+ horses. anyway about the tpi units...where are you able to get them and for how cheap. Also im 16 with no job. i bum off of my parents, if you dont do a lot to clean up a unit how much can you give it to me for. I originally posted this because i have applied for some work and hope to be able to save up for a tpi in a couple of months. If you deal these items ill PM you when i have the money sitting in my hand.
thx.
thx.
I thought you were still going for the 67 Nova but the 86 will need emissions but still not a big deal I am 20 and most the stuff on that site I have learned and built with out help other than the internet and a few phone calls it really is not that difficult so save some cash and give it a try. if you visit my web sit you can see some of my work I usualy sell complete kits for around 1,000-1,800 complete with aftermarket harness usualy check out http://www.geocities.com/tpiecology/
