Coolant Question

OK, i did the TB bypass last summer... good, fun mod... anyway i was lookin at the coolent spliter(whatever that mushroom lookin thing is) and there is a tube comin from the radiator, then up to the spliter... and it splits up into 2 sperate lines.. one to the TB, and one to the fire wall.... would it be better if i just took the hose from the fire wall and attaced it to the hose that is coming out of the radiator? or do i need to have that coolent to go back twards the TB? i wanted to do that so i can clear up some clutter in the engine bay...thanks

I think I speak for all of us when I say that this is the most confusing coolant system I have ever heard of. First off, you say you did the TB bypass... so why are there hoses still going to your TB? Second I've never seen any kind of a coolant splitter on a stock car. Here's the general routing of coolant on my 85, it should apply to your 87. The upper radiator hose on the drivers side flows to the lower section on the intake manifold where the thermostat is. Then it flows out of the manifold a bit higher and goes into the TB (this is where the bypass should be). It goes out of the TB to the firewall (heater core) then goes from the firewall back to the passenger side of the radiator. The water pump should have one big hose going to the lower passenger side of the radiator. Hope this helps a bit.

Yeah you're right. This thing is kinda confusing. But that mushroom looking thing he's talking about is probably the heater control valve. On mine the hose coming out of the TB goes to this valve, then another hose goes from the valve into the firewall to the core, then it comes out of the firewall, goes downward behind the engine, makes a T connection with one end going to the oil cooler and the other end going to the heater valve. So that's 3 hoses connected to the heater valve, plus the vacuum source. I really should try and find a good diagram indicating the cooling system flow in these cars.

llvll4l2c91350 u got it... thats it... i dont have a oil cooler.. but thats basicly it.. i couldnt remember the name of the heater valve... im sorry for the confusion... but thats what im tryin to figure it out... ok... no do u see that hose that runs from the radiator, to the fire wall for the heater core... there is a T connection that has a hose to go up to the heater valve thats on the pass. side... then on the heater valve, there are 2 hoses... one went to the tb and one went back to the fire wall also(to where, i dont know... *** i need a dig. camera) what i wanted to know is can i just take out the heater valve, and just have the hose that comes up from the T to go connect with the other hose that goes to the fire wall.. i was thinking, do i need to still have the coolant go to through the by pass?

From looking at the system it seems you can remove the heater valve without any problems. What you can't do is remove the hose that comes out of the intake manifold. If you take the valve out you'll need to connect that hose to either the hose that goes to the firewall or the one that comes up from the T (you won't have heat anymore though). The T connection looks like it's there as a bypass when the heater is not on. When you turn it on the heater valve directs the coolant to the hose that goes into the firewall and when it's off, the valve directs it to the hose with the T connection. So it doesn't mater whether or not your heater is on. You always have coolant flowing from the manifold to the valve.

Intake manifold to heater valve to firewall hose (if heater is on) or to T connection hose (if heater is off) to oil cooler to radiator. I'm thinking this is how the system flows.

Just Run a Damn Hose from the Nipple on the Intake to the heater Core, and from there to the Nipple on the Radiator.

Not that hard, folks...
