All MAF sensors created equal

Yesterday I realized that the MAF sensor was missing off of my new project car. I had another motor that I swipped it off of for now but I am gonna have to pick one up. All of the new ones I have found cost nearly as much as the car. Its an 86 with an 89 GTA TPI motor. My question is are all the stock MAFs the same? Or do I have to have one for an 89? Also whats a reasonable price on a used one? Will a Corvette one work? It runs on the other one I have but don't if its right! Thanks for any help

Car: GTA -89
Engine: Blown 415"
Transmission: 4L80E
Axle/Gears: Strange 12-bolt
Go for a Wells/conrad SU-145 instead of a new bosch. Costs 160$ ......

search and you will find out where you can order it......

Yup. Best price, best performance and best warranty. It's a no-brainer.

If you do decide to get a used one, you need one from an 85-89 TPI car. V6 MAFs won't work. The 85 MAF is a different design than the 86-89 style, but is much more reliable thanks to a larger wire diameter, and even though it doesn't produce the same output signal, it still works fine with the 86-89 computer. I'm running one on my GTA with no adverse effects.

And don't forget, you could just swap to speed density for even less than the Wells MAF, and then you never have to worry about replacing it down the road again either

roflmao. MAF guys hate it when people say that, so i just had to throw it in. I mean, i know if i had a MAF car, there is no way i would ever buy a MAF for it.

Some of us just consider it to be a hell of a lot easier to replace the MAF then to repin the harness, change the ECM and knock sensor, and have a custom chip burned that will understand the old style VSS signal. It's a pain in the ***, and if you're not the type of person that's good with wiring, it can become a nightmare.

You can do all that, or you can take your trusty screwdriver, and in 10 minutes or less, replace your MAF with one that carries a lifetime warranty and is still perfectly adequate for the horsepower level that 99.9% of the TPI cars will ever see.

Oh yeah... and you don't have to burn a new PROM every time you change your air cleaner.

Yes. The wells MAF is the film-type setup used in the LT1 & LS1 style MAFs, but has an output signal that is compatible with the TPI computer. I believe Wells is the only one on the market for TPI cars that uses this style.

The Wells Maf uses a film strip instead of the the hot wire method.
The film strip is a better design and yes the Wells uses a built in circuit to eliminate the hot wire inputs. Cost about $160+s/h.
