Hello all. I'm smelling gas coming from the charcoal canister (gas vapor purge canister). Has anyone had this problem? The wierd thing is that the BLM's are arround 118 which is a little rich, but not bad. Fuel pressure is set to 41 lbs. at idle. Any suggestions?

Is your VSS working?

Check the check valve and vacuum lines around there and where it connects at the TB. Later CCs are non-servicable, so if you need to replace it you have to get a whole new one.

 

JZa - the VSS is not working (using a dakota digital box that I need to re-wire) but what does that have to with it? Also, in my PROM, I disabled VSS diagnostics.

Can I replace the purge valve in the canister? Or do I need the whole canister with the new purge valve in it? What feed the canister with gas? The long line that goes to the TB, does it feed the cansiter or does that feed the TB?

Some years have a replaceable filter on the underside of the charcoal canister. If this is plugged it will cause the gas smell.

 

Sorry, I am not going to be of any help, but would like to know the answer also. I have the same situation as you, and my VSS is not connected. What do the two have in common?

 

On a '91, the purge solenoid is part of the canister. I just ordered a whole new one from GM ($73.00). When it comes in tomorrow, I'll put it in and see if it fixes it. I dont think the VSS has anything to do with it (I disabled VSS diagnostics in the PROM) and I still smell gas. A vented gas cap would probably help, but I've heard that you need the pressure of a non-vented cap if you still run the in-tank style fuel pump. Is this true?

Sorry I haven't checked in in a while.

The ECM uses the VSS signal to control the purge solenoid. If it doesn't work, that will cause that fuel smell on shutoff.

Disabling the VSS diagnostics will keep it from setting a code, but the CCP function will still not work without a VSS signal.

The best way to fix it is to restore a VSS signal to the ECM.

 

Is it hurting anything without the VSS being hooked up?

 

cool, then I will return the new canister to GM and try to get my speedo working again (I'm having issues with the digital dakota conversion box). If I wire the six-speed vss direct to the ecm and not use the conversion box, will that work or would the speedo be off, or could I short something?
