e fans on a switch

i put my fans on a switch, and when i flip them on, the idle drops, but it goes back up, is this normal, i remember when they used to work (before i put them on the switch) i didnt feel or see a change in the idle when they came on.

same thing happens to me. It has to do with a large current draw when the fan is switched on it takes power away from the rest of the car, so the ignition becomes weak for a second or two. nothing too abnormal but I would rather my car didnt do it and im sure you would like yours to stop aswell, if anyone has a fix for this I sure would like to know.

i was thinking, is it 24volts instead of 12v since there are two fans on one switch?

No, the only effect two fans will have on the voltage is a voltage drop across the circuit before vs. after the load (the fan motors). Fan performance will vary a great deal though in parallel vs. series wiring...

The problem is the large amount of current required to start the fans spinning. I want to say somebody has posted exactly what each draws on startup before, but I'm not positive on that. Anyways, with both fans on the same switch (starting at the same time), there will be a huge current draw, resulting in the observed drop in idle speed. Using the stock setup, the fans came on one at a time, never at the same time. Thus, the drop was still there, but not as noticable. You could reduce the problem by putting each fan on a separate switch, as long as you don't switch them on at exactly the same time. You'd start one, give it time to get up to speed, then turn on the second fan.

If I was you I would keep one fan on the switch and put the other one on the (radiator fan switch) located on pass side of block between cyl. 6 and 8. the stock one probably makes the fan come on at about 220 but if you go to the autoparts store and asked for one for an 87 buick regal with 3.8l turbo engine, it has a on temp of 200 and an off of 180 so its basically the same thing as the hypertech fan switch but its only 20 bucks. I just did this last week and it works great, I hate having to worrie about turning the fan on everytime the engine gets too warm. There was a few times I let it get Higher than I would have like it to but never anymore than 225*, I would do the this just as a safety precaution, you dont want to meltdown your engine.
