Yes it is ONLY a 305
Yes it is ONLY a 305
Yes, Ive been hearing alot that the 305TPIs are ****, but here is where I stand, I got my car CHEAP, it has 80,000KMs mint condition car... the 305 is a V8, does have punch, does spin the tires and does GO...
You see I also use to drive a 1989 Chevrolete Beretta 2.8L Auto, that car was lucky if it pulled a 17 in the 1/4 mile, so you have to relize going from that car to the 305 Camaro is quite a change, and the Beretta was an auto, the Camaro is a 5 spd, even better!!
So now really why is the 305 so bad? What is the fuel economy vs the 350? and Im willing to give up a few CC's for the 5 spd!!

i think a 305 tpi and a 5 speed is an awesome combo. i was looking for a 91 - 92 thirdgen with that combo but i fell into a good deal for another 350 tpi auto.
good luck on ur new car. check out some good first mods at this page.

I think the LB9 5 speed combo is great too.
As for gas milage... let's just say that my L98 vette gets much better milage than my LB9 5 speed gta.

I can't complain about the 305 TPI in my 85 IROC. It runs 15.00 @92 mph. The engine stock to the best of my knowledge. The car has headers, a Hypertech chip, and K&N's. That is it. I believe it has a 3.23 rear in it as well. The best part, it pulls down around 25 mpg on the highway.

There's nothing wrong with the 5.0 and the 5spd.
But I think the L98 has more POTENTIAL in the long run when you start swapping out the cam/heads/intake/exh/gears/etc..

Well I just got back from florida with my 305 5 speed and the whole time I could go 220 miles on the first 1/2 tank of gas!!! but mine used to be an auto so i have 2.73s, 1750 rpms at 70 mph. I went just under the halfway line each time.

my LB9 t-5 with 3.42 gears got 360 miles to a hi way tank (24 mpg) with a few 140 mph blasts...so im sure it could get 380-390 to a tank
at 78 mph the rpms are 2,500

Can you really hit 140mph with an LB9!?!?
that's awsome!, my IROC is still under the knife to get done and if it can hit that I'll be stoked!

'87 305 TPI 5 speed. The stock cast-iron heads love to rev and breath up higher. It's a nice combo. Hit 260 kms ( ~ 150 mph ) on an open stretch of highway ( yes I really did bury the needle if the car had wings I'd be airborn!). Recently dropped a 350 in the car. Ever wondered why GM never made a 350 5 speed Iroc in '87? It's like night and day.

True, the 350's have more potential than the 305's, but that's not to say a 305 can't be made rather fast
. Take, for example, Willie's car. When I'm all done with my project Z, I should be well in the 12's with a "measly" 305. The other problem is, of course, the lack of manual trannies with the 350's - some of us don't want to have to spend thousands of extra dollars to drop in a good 5- or 6-speed. A lot of people criticize the 305's without reason - I'll certainly admit that maybe it does take a little more to get an LB9 to run the same numbers as an L98, but that just gives the 305 guys all that much more excuse to mod
.
If, however, the L98's were available with manual trannies, I'd be all over that like white on r i c e
