Chip Rip Off

THERE IS A MEMBER OF THIS BOARD CLAIMING TO BURN CHIPS FOR $40. I PAID HIM IN MARCH AND SENT HIM A COPY OF MY BIN FILE. HE NOTIFIED ME 6 WEEKS AGO THAT HE HAD BURNED MY NEW CHIP AND WOULD MAIL THE NEXT DAY. SINCE THEN, NO CONTACT. IF I HAVE NOT RECEIVED THE CHIP BY NEXT FRIDAY, YOU WILL ALL KNOW THE BAST**DS NAME AND MEMBER HANDLE.

I would be very interested to find out who this is also. I have been talking to someone that does programming for about the same price. I hope it isn't the same guy.

Sorry guys, I emailed him tonight to give him the benefit of doubt. Don't know if he's been sick or something.

HA!
I knew it!
Yeah he ALMOST got me... I ordered a chip and he never sent it so I contacted paypal and got most of my money back.
Was quite frustrating though. Waiting and waiting...

I tried, but the 30 days had ran out. Do you know if his real name is Ian Moore? If so, maybe someone on the board that knows him will kick his *** for me. By the way, did you ever get anyone to burn you a chip reasonably? I still need one!

Yes it's Ian Moore. I only chose to go with him cause he seemed to know his stuff, and had lots of seemingly intelligent posts on this board, etc.
Also, I didn't want to get into chip burning yet when all I needed was a change in inj. constant.
Haven't seen anyone else burning chips though, and I'm now kinda wary, of course.
Guess I'll have to get the chip burning stuff eventually.

Guys, email me at bnmotorsports@msn.com and I'll burn a chip for you for very little money. If you buy the chips and send them to my house I'll do it for almost nothing. HEY! I said almost nothing. LOL! I hate to see fellow members get burned... Good luck getting the current deal figured out.

If you want a chip then don't pay somebody you DO NOT know to burn you one. You have absolutely no idea if the guy has real experience or not. At the VERY least ... do a search in the DIY-PROM forum to see if the guy knows his stuff or not. As an example ... do a search on me ... then do a search on somebody else who offers to program a chip for you.

Also - to those individuals who offer to sell chips ....

Do NOT expect to get help in the DIY-PROM forum. If anyone programs chips for money then starts asking questions in the DIY-PROM forum ... heh ... you will NOT get an answer from anyone who knows what you are doing. I'll be d4mned if that forum will be your 'product support'.

I don't burn chips for money and I never will. Do the right thing ... help to encourage others to learn to do it.

Tim

Burning chips "on the side" for money is kinda lame, especially if you get your "customers" from sites like this.
I would burn a chip for someone that just needed something like VATS turned off, fan switch N/O or N/C changed or even injector constant changed for the cost of postage. But that is as far as I'd go, making "performance" changes or tuning for modified engines is up to the owner. I'd rather you blow up your own engine instead of me

The same thing happened to me. Everything was fine and I had contact with him until after I sent the money. Finally I got ahold of him and he said that he has been busy and that he burnt it that day and was sending it out. 3 weeks and still nothing. I then had to keep instant messaging him and after a while of ignoring my emails and IMs he finally answered to some of my friends. I contacted the post office and filled out a mail freud form. He then told me what was going on. He told me that he had a pile of orders for chips that he kept putting off and just figured the person could wait one more day. One more day turned into months.
I finally got my chip after well over a month and it made my car run awesome. My gas mileage went up about 5mpg since I have 24#injectors, my fan turns on at 195 degrees and I cut .3 seconds on my quarter mile time.
I don't think that he was in this to rip people off in the first place. He just doesn't care. He figures that he can put this off, meanwhile he has unhappy customers.
I have a lot of info about him, someone even gave me his home phone number.
I will let him know that you guys would like your stuff.

Ian,

Burned a chip(s) for me. He made quite a few simple changes and seent me a total of 3 chips, stock with just the inj. constant changed, and 2 with ARAP variations. This was in Nov/Dec 2002. He was pretty quick, and I appreciate his help. Not here to stick up for him , just tell what my experience was. No times on the car, I have minor drivabiltiy problems , and not the best mileage ( about 14mpg & and a light surge)( every thing has been changed, need to take to an expert to diagnose) ( I need to get my laptop set up to scan). However, raced a 97 ffirehawk from a stoplight and tore it a new one, car has a very good mid range.

My experience $.02

I agree that people should learn to do this stuff on their own. I did and I am glad I did. But I understand the expense of prom burning equipement for some might not be an option right now.

I'd be willing to burn the .bin you provide on the chip you provide for $20.00 but I will in no way create a .bin for you.

Anyone interested can email me here

I don't want to make a living at this just help out some guys that can't afford to buy all the equipement to make a inj.constant change in their .bin....I know I would have liked someone to do that for me last summer.

Just make sure you have a scanner to monitor the changes made, and as soon as you can get yourself set up to burn your own chips, it's really the best way in the long run.

Besides bits and pieces of information from this site, can anyone recommend a book that a person just learning can read? Not the basics of EFI but the "nuts and bolts" of the mapping and how to change it to match a certain engine configuration.

Never heard of such a book. It would be very difficult to write (and be correct) since each and every engine combo is going to respond differently and require tweaks in areas that others might not.

How about a book that tells you the lingo....like what is a bin.? How do you create one? How does pulse width change the way a motor runs? All us "unenlightened ones" get from sources like magazines is how management systems like Accel Calmap controlled units and Holley Commander's are the way to go for ultimate tunability. Then in the same rag, you'll find how these same recommended systems are still lacking the precision compared to the factory management systems. Huh? This website is the first I have seen where owners burn their own chips. It's also the first time I've seen companies like Jet, Howell, et al chastised for lack of results. It all tells me I got a lot to learn. I need resources!

How to Repair and Modify Chevrolet Fuel Injection By Ben Watson.
ISBN 0-87938-502-2
This is a good place to start, it covers the basics and some advanced stuff.
Other than that I really don't know of any publications that are an "index" of the terms or describe what changing this or that will do to an engine.

BTW a .bin file is just short for a binary file, the file system used for the info stored on the chips.

Just web sites, I have yet to come across an actual printed text on prom tuning.
Here are some of them, you may or may not have read them
http://para.noid.org/~lj/PCM%20Tutorial/PCMtutorial.htm
http://www.cruzers.com/~ludis/
http://www.diy-efi.org/gmecm/
http://www.diy-efi.org/diy_efi/oem/gm/tunetip.html

There are more I'm sure.

You have to gather info for yourself, teach yourself, then learn by burning lots of chips, scanning the car, analyzing data, burning more chips, etc.

There is no one book that can tell all, that's why it is so un-simple, there is no 'easy-way' or diet way to get into it, you are either all in or all out.

Im still wondering about certain lingo that has me stumped like romulating and how in g0ds name can you use a ti 83+ for "romulating" but not certain lap tops?

Like all the other hardware and software out there, some computers just won't run it, no rhyme or reason to it, some configurations just don't work together.
