Making Vortec heads work with old TPI base

I was talking with my friends the other day, one of which works for TPIS, and they said that you could make the Vortec heads work with the TPI base that I have on my car now. Some material would have to be added to the base as well as some drilling on the heads. Anyone know if this can actually be done and what is actually involved? I am looking to get the heads fixed for about $65 and the base for under $200 so with the purchase of the heads I would have just over $500 in the base and heads. If anyone know anything about this the info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well you could buy my Edelbrock base if you want. It's been modified (metal added to the ports) to a 1206 gasket size.

I've been told the SD base is the best bet though.

If YOU can't weld aluminum and especially if you are paying anywehere near $200 for the base, you are WAY better off just buying the aftermarket piece. It is bigger and better, and by the time you buy a stocker and pay to have it welded, drilled and machined (flange for true) you will be in the hole.

Kinda like the LT1 intake. If you have the skillls it's a great cheap piece. If you're paying for the whole thing i just don;t see why you don't buy the new part for the same money.

I think that you misunderstood what I was saying. I will be able to have the base modified for the heads and the heads modified for the base for under $265 and then I will be able to get a set of Vortec heads for $250 so all told I have $510 in heads and intake where as the Vortec base alone is $400 and then another $250 for the heads. So with those prices would it be worth it and does anyone know what is involved in the process. Thanks.

So your talking $510. vs $650 total, myself, I would spend the extra $140. and get a much better manifold.

Exactly. An aftermarket base is far and away worth spending the extra $140. It will make more power, and it won't represent money down the drain when you go looking for that power in a month...

I would spend the extra 140$ as well for the SDPC base. Sure someone might be able to get the port openings on the stock base to match the Vortec intake port kinda close but it will never be perfect along with the fact that the rest of the runner in the base is not designed for the modified intake entry angle of the Vortec head.

I have the SDPC base, I did alot of porting on mine as I wasnt exactly thrilled with it out of the box. If you are handy with a die grinder you might want to do some porting as well, especially around the injectors bosses.

Do the SDPC vortec TPI intakes accept the 9th injector?

If you have a stock base take the advise and get the new aftermarket one, if you already have a good aftermarket base then it is a toss up to me. But also remember you could sell you current base and make up some if not all of the $140 difference.

Yes, it will take a CSI setup.
