I may have finally solved my MAF problems

For those who follow the saga..

I finally got the car to start and run with the Wells MAF. It required replacing the computer AND the power relay. It figures that I'd have 2 separate problems, both operating intermittantly just to keep me confused. I changed the ECM the other night, and the car started (which was an improvement), THEN threw a code 34. It never behaved that way with the Wells before, so I had yet another different type of response from this POS. So anyway, after testing the voltage and grounds at the MAF plug, and finding nothing wrong, I threw a spare relay on there just for sh*ts and grins. No more code 34. I went out tonight and started it again. It started up well and didn't toss a code.

So... I took the IROC computer and put it in the GTA. I started the car, and although it started and idled fine, it threw a code 34 right away.

It looks like the relay and the computer were both screwing with me.

Now if I can just figure out my IAC problems maybe this car will stop sucking long enough to take it for a ride.

Ah! The light at the end of the tunnel!

Hopefully your struggles will come to an end soon.

Good luck Jim!

I doubt it, but we can all hope.

You mean you don't even drive your car? I drove mine for months with a daily SES light being thrown by a Bad O2 sensor.

Good job on the diagnosis though man. I also made a major breakthrough recently. I found out that my low cruise speed "jerking" was being caused by the convertor locking up at roughly 20mph.

Reason: 3.73 gears without the correct driven gear in the tranny gave a false reading to the ECM. Convertor lockup point was 35 mph. So at 35 speedo mph, the convertor would lock up. Reality was that was really somewhere closer to 20-25 mph or so. WAY too low. So I changed it to reflect the real speed of my car and it went away. I was so giddy I almost peed myself! A problem I was dealing with for 2 summers was finally gone with a few keystrokes.

Glad to hear it!

Driving my car when it's not function properly pisses me off, so why do it? I've got other cars that run right. If it was just an o2 sensor code I might think otherwise, but with the MAF behaving like it has, combined with my IAC issues, makes it a whole lot of not fun to drive.

I think you and I might be in a similar ****uation. My 87 IROC goes into limp home mode after ? I've yet to figure out why either.. Been trying to get another MAF on the boards here but got ****ed by this guy Joseph Croteau in MA. I don't have a lot of ends to spend so that robbery/loss was significant. I don't suppose anyone here lives in MA and is willing to regulate this fool for me ?

What part of MA is he in? I'm not driving across the state, but I may be willing to visit him if he's nearby.

Wouldn't usually do this to a person, but he kept dragging it on for 2 months blaming it on his girlfriend, and then his work schedule.. etc..etc.
