tpi swap runs great except
ok tpi swap on 81 camaro.everythign is great except 2 small probems.1st prob is most of the time coming to a stop it dies if i tap the gas when i push in the clutch its fine.figure this is something easy.secound problem only 1st and 2nd gear if i rip on it hard it will pull insanely to say 5500 to 5800 in first ten just cutout and pick back up i shift into secound about 4000 to 4500 same thing.almost seems like it runs out of fuel but its not i checked fuel pressure and its great47 psi wot doesnt faulter at all.im using a 91 sd setup with 7330 ecm and painless harness.355 9.5 to one and ported 993 heads with bigger valves the motor got tpis grind 700-135 224dur .495lift 112 sep.heavily ported upper and lower stock runners and t-body 22lb injectors.i set timing to 6deg with est unplugged besides that i havent got into it much.everything looks good so far.jus seeing if anyone could point me in any directions.oh and btw i swapped from a carb setup to this and no lost oer it actually pulls much harder.1st and 2nd fry as soon as the go pedal hit carpet.thakns to all the people that helped me with this on the board here.eric

Kick your timing up to at least 12 degrees and that should help a lot. I would think that you could go to 16 because I do with my ZZ4 cam which is slightly smaller than yours. After that see how it runs.
What does your car idle at? If under 700, open the throttle body some more to get a little air into it. You will have to reset the TPS back to where you were running it. Most people I know run around .60 (.54 stock) but that's on MAF systems not SD systems.

set minimum air setting and idles fine and doesnt die on quik stops now.i set min. to 750rpm.as far as the drop in power up top its picking up knock and backing out on timing.i set the timing to 6deg. at first i think its got somethng to do with the gas i put in it.it was cheapo 87 octane that was for the lawnmower but my car needed to run.im going t fill it with 93 an see how it is.

The cheap gas will definitely do you in on performance. After you get a load of gas run through it, try kicking up the timing some more. You will lose some low end but should gain even more back on top end. The true test of where it should be is the track. "Feelings" can be deceptive….. Good luck!!!!!

i have very similiar problems with my 82 t/a with a LG-4 thats been converted to speed density tpi, car surges real bad when accelerating around 1/2 throttle, gets really bad from around 2200rpm-3000rpm, mine also stalls when dpressing clutch when coming to a stop, full throttle though the surging is less noticeable bt still there, I'm getting a code 24 for the VSS, I talked to tpi specialties and they said a speed density system will not run right without the correct speed sensor, so today will buy one and let you know if it cures anything on mine, I also have a automatic prom in mine so that could be a issue too

i had a custom prom burned for mine.i have some stuff that that prom doesnt use like vss and since my car is stick no lockup control theres no a/c or fan control either since that stuff isnt used.since i reset the min air flow it doesnt seem to have any problems holding idle except that aic motor wont go below like 60 on my scanner ever, but it idles great and no more stalling on quik stops.i was at macungie rod show all day today and didnt mess with the car but tomorrow im going to fill her up with some 93 and run it for awhile see how it is.

With out VSS input the engine can not compensate when you come to a stop, and it will stall. The same thing happens when people convert to an auto TPI to a 5 speed car and just skip the park/neutral switch. In gear, the ECM will adjust the idle up. With out the inputs the ECM has no idea your doing anything other than sitting in your driveway.
I'd look to use VSS input if you could. You can find an inline speed signal generator from places that install after market cruise controls. Or you can buy one from places like www.jagsthatrun.com
Mark.
