Superram vs LTR inside(New Best)

Here is a good comparison of a LTR vs Superam.

First off, let me say I DO NOT RECOMMEND THE SUPERRAM, BUT it is like the TPI and just keeps pulling up top and I still do have my surging idle/cut off problem. I think it is the fact that the runner gaskets are so large on the SR runners that it is a small leak between the runners and the base.(edelbrock base)

Anyways on to the comparison.

LTR dynoed 295.9 at the wheels at about 5200 rpmwith a good air/fuel ratio. Good hooking 1/8 track netted me a

60' 1.600
1/8' 7.91
mph 87.1

FYI. Best MPH was less than 109 in 1/4

Put on the SR(no other changes) and went to the track with the air/fuel ratio a little lean up top(still on TPI tune) 1/4 with about the same temp numbers are as follows. Also note that the tranny 1/2 and 2/3 shift is getting VERY slippery

60' 1.598
1/8' 7.666(I don't like that)
mph 88.9(should be higher)
1/4' 12.03
mph 112.9

With a better tune and new tranny(I don't wanna spend anymore $) I think I can bust out a 11.8 in the cooler weather coming.

Time will tell. Now if it would idle

Very interesting Nuf. It's good to see somone do an actual comparison between the two with #'s to back it up. I have a few questions for you:

1.) What LTR brand(s) did you use?
2.) Why don't you recomend the SR?
3.) Any porting on either?
4.) What are the specs/type for that cam.

Thanks alot for sharing these findings with the rest of us!

Was gears and tires are you running?

When you say 503 X-treme grind, are you talking about the XR276HR cam?

I run the 503 X-treme but on a 112 LSA in my motor (I love that cam)!

3.73 gears with a 3200 stall. Tires are 275/50 R15 BFG Drag radials.

1)I had SLP runners siamesed about 2'' with a siamesed plenum, and everything gasket matched.

2)The SR is the biggest Pain in the a$$ ever. And when it comes off(to fix the surging) I have to rethread the plenum(have are crossthreaded) and tap the base where some have pulled out from the SR bolts being a little too short to get good meat. Although it is the best all around intake for me. I loss NO torque and it keeps on pulling

3)The SR is box stock and a lot bigger than my Edelbrock base.

4)My cam is 224''/230 duration with 503''/510'' lift. on a 112.

Good job!

Great times on a great combo, that SR will blow those SLPs away all day long. I used to have SLPs on my stocker , sold em though as I knew there was no way they would properly feed my new combo, I am now also running the SR on my new 383. I was lucky, I was able to install the SR while the motor was on a stand before I dropped it in the engine bay. Good luck on the tear down for new gaskets.

That short time and trap speed are good for an 11.9XXX. Its only a matter of passes to score the 11s. Get some fuel up top and be sure you are bringing in full timing advance by 3200RPM. You should be able to knock down a couple .10ths that way.

What are your shift points and what RPM do you hit the traps at?

Thanks Ominous!!

The transmission slips so much and the tach is a little off. That is my next step. A nice tach and getting the tranny problems resolved. Thanks for the encouragement.

Great times! Looks like the SR helped out a bunch. Yeah, I wouldn't recommend it either. Very good before and after comparison though.

I have the infamous surging idle on my SuperRam also and will be tearing down the top half of it fairly soon. Has anyone here tried using RTV instead of gaskets on the SuperRam?

No leaks on my SR. The only place I used RTV was on the plenum lid gasket. I also used thread sealant on all the bolts.

I would not recomend using only RTV, I dont think that would work out real well.

So....This is kinda common? Hummm.. i thin I am going to look closer at the place where the base meets the runners. I have an Edelbrock base that is a little smaller than the gaskets that were sent with Superram. I think the gaskets are leaking where the cold start is on both sides

Never heard of an idle issue with the SR intakes? No problem here. I use the SR gaskets by themselves.
