DIY big bore MAF

Yes I know, it's the 8 bit coding that ultimately limits the MAF on our cars, but the stock housing is VERY small. have anyone made a big bore MAF with PVC and have pictures of it?

If you did you would have to reprogram for the change in air flow that the larger housing would cause.

But in my estimation this would be the best way to defeat the coding limitations of the stock program.

it'd still be a 8 bit signal wouldn't it? I wish they had a way to convert the signal from 8 bit to 16 bit

I have a Car Craft at home that is about 3 yrs old. I will post the article if you want (after I find it), but it mentioned Granatelli selling some sort of setup, utilizing a F#rd MAF that would work with our computers. Seems to me that if this was worth anything, the DIY crowd would have filled the rest of us in.

Nobody is making one. There's a million articles out there saying someone is making one, or is going to... its not happening. Forget it.

As for what to do, just take the screens and fins out of your stock one, or go buy a Wells maf and call it good. It'll flow more than you need anyway.

got the screens removed. approx how many cfm does that little MAF flow? It really ticks me off that inspite of the popularity of our cars no one has bothered to make a single aftermarket MAF for them!!!

I don't think it matters. You can take a 305, start it w/o the air cleaner and listen to the air flowing through the maf. Then pull the maf and listen, you'll be able to hear the engine breathing better. The maf's cfm figures is only a small part of the engines breathing charateristics. The other parts will outweigh the importance of cfm rating of the sensor. So in the end, I think that even the newer style sensors disturb normal air flow....

Whats shocking is that nascar race cars run on a 390 cfm carb meanwhile make 700 horsepower. You would think the stock maf is breathing sufficient.

And it is, unless you are trying to make well over 400 hp it will do fine (as long as you don't loose resolution on it)

with 711 cfm it certainly is. those nascar 358s are huge bore (400 block based) motors, closer to 1000 HP without restrictions
