Why can't I find my starter relay???
I looked under the dash and someone had butchered every wire under there, from a past security system. I can not find any relay other than the one above the hood release (which according to GM parts direct is the body wiring relay). Is it in a different place on the 90's cars???
It started fine every day except for yesterday at work. I thought my battery was dead, but it was ok. After a while it cranked up, and I drove it home, out to the store later that night and then pulled it in the garage. This morning I crank it up, pull it out and turn it off. I go clean out the garage and shut the garage door. Go to crank it up and nothing. It won't even turn over. My switch seems to work since my gauges peg when I try to crank it. I know VATS is usually the problem, but I want to make sure the starter relay is ok first. SO....any ideas on where my relay is????
TIA-
Jonathan

It's not behind the dash, it's behind the drivers side kick panel just in front of the door.

So it is the one I already found, right above the hood release??? I thought I read somewhere it was near the brake pedal under the dash? The one I found has part # 12065122 on it and"f e d c b a" written across it, does that sound like the right one?
Thanks.
Thanks.

That should be it. The letters "f e d c b a" are the lables for each wire in the connector.

Okay. I am a dork. I now realize you actually have to take off the kick panel to get to it:it was a different relay...I found it, bypassed it, but it still does the same thing which is nothing....man, I can't wait to sell this thing. I wonder if it is the wire to the starter that is burned out...from previous posts it seems to be either that or something with VATS. My security light does not stay on, I can't remember if this is good or bad...I can not get it in the garage and I don't want to work in this crappy 35 degree GA winter weather.
This sux- Hey John, why don't you take the short trip out to Snellville and fix it for me

Oh yeah, I should mention that this is not the first time I have a problem with this. A few months after I bought the car, it wouldn't turn over at all. I installed a starter switch, which I still have to use sometimes still, but not usually. I haven't had any problems until now, which is in about two years...I just tried bypassing the switch, and nothing happened, so the switch is obviously good... TGO Supporter

Try tapping (TAPPING) the starter with a hammer or ratchet something hard. Some times the armature has a bad spot. Some times it will start sometimes not. Happened to me on my suburban.

If you want you could send me your chip and I can disable VATS for you for good. I don't really charge, I just accept donations.

I used a paper clip to jump the two large wires, but when I would turn the key, I could see and hear the relay working (the little lever would move and contact the side of the relay). Doesn't that mean the relay is fine?
