The Fasturn heads have raised intake ports the same as the vortecs and they won't work with your stock tpi setup.

You would have to elongate the two center bolt holes on each side of the intake to make it work on the base ZZ4. The ports will line up.
Fast Burn heads have an intake flange capable of running either a Vortec or a conventional cyl head. As such, it has dual bolt patterns- Vortec and conventional. However, the conventional pattern is the pre-1987 one, in that the holes are perpendicular to the flange. Your 1989 manifold has the revised angle on the four center hold down bolts. Like gixxer9 said, you'll have to elongate those holes to make it work. I believe Edelbrock has a tool to do just that.

A standard chev sb intake will not work on Fastburn heads. Yes they are drilled for both but they standard intake runners won't even cover the intake ports on the Fastburns. When the HSR first came out I tried to put one on my Fastburns but when set in place you can still see about 1/4" of the intake port on the heads above the outermost part of the intake.
You must use a vortec style intake on those heads.

Like I stated, the BASE zz4 (l98 style heads), can use the standard intake manifold, but the center bolt holes must be elongated to be compatible with the bolt angle. Fastburns are just fancy vortec's, therefore, using the vortec pattern.

I have a ZZ4 350 CID and did not have to elongate the center intake bolt holes. The heads on a ZZ4 are L98 style aluminum heads from the Corvette.

Hey Jmiller,
I know I am late getting in on this but the ZZ4 does not use L98 corvette heads. The corvette heads are 64cc, the ZZ4 has 57cc. I have both motors. Just FYI
Cheers

I thought they were the same. Years ago when I bought my ZZ4 from Scogin/Dickey, that's what they told me. Could the 58CC be the only difference???

I would suggest that you buy an intake rather than different heads. The "Fast Burn" heads are good for more power than the ZZ4 cam can put out. The cam will only pull "hard" (emphasis on HARD) to 4800-5K with the stock stuff, actually I always had the Edelbrock base with the ZZ4 cam..... You will gain a minimum of 500 rpm of MUCH HARDER pull with the aftermarket intake and runners. In fact, it will pull much harder from 4500 rpm on.
GM and Street and Performance both make Vortec/Fastburn TPI intakes. I would go that route first. Later you could add 28-30# injectors, SLP runners, 52MM Throttle body and a much larger fuel pump. I do not reccomend the Buick GN fuel pump for that motor or even a stock motor. No one I know has had a lot of success with it. Most guys I talk to with fairly stock motors are finding the 286 LPH Mustang (UGH!!!) fuel pump does wonders for their acceleration. I am changing my fuel pump later on myself. I just don't have the time to do it right now (Do have a LARGE Bosch pump).
Bottom line: Plan well, take your time, Do it one step at a time if money is short, don't get too carried away and have to redo everything twice or thrice......
