What could I expect with this combo?

Alright guys, i've been out of the thrid gen world for a bit. Even when I was in it, I was in high school, and didn't really know anything about it. Well, lately, i've been thinking about taking on a project. I'd like to find a 91/92 Z28 L98. This is where i'd like my combo...

Beefed up 350, maybe even 355 or 383
Upper and lower Superam
custom cam
AFR heads
long tubes or slp 1 3/4's
T56
Spohn suspension
12 bolt with 3.73's
17x9.5 ZR1's with Nitto dr's

So how would this work? I'm thinking it'd be quite the torque monster, but I also want it to run hard on the highway like my LS1 does.

I have been reading this board now the entire weekend, but as you can see from when I originally registered ('99), I haven't really posted anything. I have been thinking the other intakes might work better than the SR, but I guess I need to research a lot.

The only thing that I am intimidated about is tuning. I've gone through the Mass Air vs Speed Density threads. There is no clear answer to which is easier or better, so I just decided to pick the car I always liked on the outside instead. Basically, I'd like to find a tuner to get the car running (like Rapid), but if I need to learn it, I will.

My buddy has an 89 IROC that went from a AFR/Superram'd 355 with a T5 (originally L98/700) that ran high 12s, to a TT 350 stealth ram T56. I just thought i'd like to have something to run his first combo into the ground, not to mention I miss my IROC soooo bad.

So thanks for any help. I'll probably be more of a browser than a poster, but i'll be here

Mid 12's? Hell, that's not even worth the hassle! So you're saying a H/C/I EFI small block is only good for mid 12's? I'll just stick with my 346

There has got to be a way to get a n/a tpi car to be fast. I'd really like to see 11's.

if you go with the LPE 219/219 cam and AFR 195's your combo might break into the high 11's. As far as you just going with an LS1 , yes there alot easier to make turn the times your looking for then a TPI car.....Eric

I mean, i'll keep my LS1 to go fast daily, but i'd like another 3rd gen to be really nice and keep clean in the garage. I want something to take to car shows as well. There is 1 person in this area with a modded 3rd gen, and that's my friend I mentioned.

I guess i'm just so used to how easy it is to get power from my car. I just really have a soft spot in my heart for a good running 3rd gen.

There used to be two guys on the boards by the name of ski_down_it and Corky with a superram, afr 190(i think) 406 dancing near 10s on vettes. Corky was actually in the 10s. Granted this is on a 406 and in a vette, and i don't know what cams they had, but it can be done with proper tuning.

Do a search for their screen names to check out their combos and numbers.

That combo should run high 11's. I have the LPE 219/AFR 190/SR combo and run 12.1 with no tuning. If you want more bang for your buck, I'd get the afr 195's, LT1 intake conversion, and something like the TPIS ZZ-X cam, that'll get you running mid 11's fairly easy.

As an LS1 owner myself, it is MUCH easier to make the 346 run fast, just costs a little more.

So there is hope!

You'll need to match and balance the mechanicals as well as the LS1, and then tune it as well. First part's easy.

Is close, close enough, or do you want the tune as close as possible?.

The SD ecms are a generation new, and the code that much better. It takes sophistication to get really nice drivibility, with that means more time tuning, but the result when done right, will be better.

I'd suggest you get the car, then install a SD, and learn how to work with tuning SD. Then build the engine of your dreams.
In the quest for tuning you'll learn how to tune for your exact style of driving, and that in it's self is really meaningful for some folks.

I don't have much patience, and that's why i'm not really interested in doing all the tuning myself. I also get annoyed when things don't work right, so i'd have to learn something so it doesn't have any drivability issues. I hate having to make decisions
