5.7 tpi in a 68 camaro need help

I'm planning on putting a 1988 5.7 tpi motor in to a 1968 Camaro.
I already pulled the motor and I plan on converting it to Speed Density.
I've read a lot of posts on the conversion and am still a bit lost.
I got a an ecu and map sensor from a 91 beretta. First, how do I know whether it is a 730 ecu?
Second, I don't know much about the computer system and I want to know what I will have to do to complete the conversion (ie Prom and Memcal- I don't know what they are let alone which ones I will need)

Thanks for the help
Jacob

Car: 82 ElCamino, looking for a 3rd gen
Engine: 305 TPI(427SB in progress) 730 $8D
Transmission: THM350 (Getting a 4L80E soon)
Axle/Gears: 10 Bolt w/ 2.43 gears :(
https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=200259 Look at article 2 and 3. Also would check out the DIY Prom section for assistance. Swap is a no brainer if you pay attention to detail. The ECM should have a label on it that says 01227730. For the wiring harness I would recommend one from Painless unless you already haveone from the MAF system.

Over at the 2nd Generation Camaro Owners group, I just wrote a preliminary TPI swapping guide based on my experience putting in my TPI and then converting to the ZZ4, MiniRam, etc...

You can find it here.

http://www.nastyz28.com/2gcog/dtrest.html

It's geared more toward 70-81 Camaros, but I'm sure a lot of it can apply to you as well.

Scroll down to the EFI guide by ULTM8Z. It's a PDF that you can download.

I had already read the two treads on this board and it left me still a little bit lost. Mainly I wanted to know what PROM and memcal I need for a SD 5.7 with a manual t56 behind it.

THat article on the TPi swap into a 2nd gen looks very heloful but it too left me with some questions- do you think you could help me out ULTM8Z?

THanks a lot guys

Sure, just drop me an e-mail. But, I would suggest posting the questions on this board. There are quite a few more people here who are more knowlegeable about this stuff than I am.

In your article I thought you said that the battery lead went to the alt? why wouldn't it still go to the starter?

I also wanted to know where you hooked up your map sensor vacuum line?

And lastly I was wondering if you could explain the 3 wire 02 set up

I'm sure I'll think of (or run into) more questions once I actually start.

Thanks a lot

Jacob,

You still retain the batt-starter wire as-is. The alternator has its own wire- the wire that the alternator uses to charges the battery. This is the wire I suggest you change since it is also the one that the alternator uses to power the rest of the vehicle electrical system.

The MAP sensor has its own vacuum line that connects directly to the intake manifold vacuum fitting. Any port that connects to manifold vacuum is fine. But don't tee off into the MAP line- it needs to be independent.

As far as the O2 sensor goes, I explained it in the guide. What I can do is to e-mail you the latest revision of the guide. I included some pictures of what I did. Hopefully it will help to visualize what I described in words.

Try www.fuelinjection.com and click on the GM Port Injection tab. This site list all kinda of info on TPI's including casting #'s, PROM #'s, as well as other info.

Thanks for the offer ghost 69.
I probably won't be startign the project for a while because I'm in school right now and don't have a lot of time on my hands.

One question I do have now is what changes will I have to make if I put a manual transmission?
I just picked up a T56 to put behind the TPI and I'm not sure what alterations I will have to make.

Nothing really you will have to have a PROM burnt for it because of VATS and tell them it is a manual tranny. Most of the harnesses do not have a vechicle speed sensor provision but I would recommend a place that will use one of those so you don't have idle problems while driving. You can look at the web site for some of that discussion.
