best mod combo for mid/high 13s

Whats up. I just bought my Formula with the L98 and I'm trying to figure out where to start. I'd like to get it into the mid/high 13 second range and then fix up the appearance issues. I was wondering what kind of bottom end these motors have-it seems like everyone just mods away without worrying too much about blowing them up sans nitrous or forced air. What are the best startup mods to get me into the 1/4 mile range I'm looking at? And once i mod the engine would I see much improvement by going to 3.42 or 3.73?
Thanks for any help!

welcome shortofstable

since your new, use the search and type in L98 but only search in the subject, theres a tons of stiff.

Friend of mine had a 88 Formula all he did to get into the 13s was a homemade ram air with K&N, bump up the timing to 10 BTDC
air foil, and AFPR (adjustable fuel pressure reg) that it. He also ran a NOS 150 shot and ran 12:40.

Have fun this site is a weath of information

A 1990 Formula shouldn't need to much to run in the high/mid 13's. Attention to detail will get you there easily. I would imagine you would probably run a low 14 now. So with some traction (Nittos, LCA's), a K&N cone filter, port the MAF and Plenum, bump up the timing (I dropped 2 tenths from 6*btdc to 8* btdc), and a afpr and you should be there with no problems. If not, add some headers and a cat-back ehaust and you should be laughing. Plus a new exhaust sounds cool!

Slapping on a bunch of bolt on's is usually a waste of money and don't get you to where you thought they would. Most people don't seem to give the L98 enough credit, with some thought and a litte modding/tweaking high 13's should be no problem.

Speed88 has a lot of good ideas for lowering ET. I personally picked up two tenths with a Cold Air Induction...You don't have to worry about porting the MAF because 1990 - 1992 TPI cars had speed density.

LMAO!! That was pretty stupid on my part. How can you port something that isn't there?! LOL!

You actually measured a 2/10 increase from the cold air package? I will be installing mine in the coming days/week and have been trying to find results from this.

thanks for the input guys. i was talking to a friend about the afpr and he expressed some doubts about the factory fuel pump. would bumping up the pressure put a lot of added stress on the pump or is it not that big a deal? also, for the money of porting out my stock intake would i just be better off going with an edelbrock stealth ram set up or something similar? and I g-teched my car (with old transmission, which is being replaced) and the best i pulled was 14.7. i have potenza 245's on right now but even then not a whole lot of traction-is there a better tire option that would still give me everyday drivability?

I ran a 15.73 with the factory airbox (with K&N) and with a 3.5" CAI I ran 15.52 with no other mods. The factory setup is very restrictive, You can hear the air being sucked in with CAI.

I bought the 3.5" CAI from Third Gen Resource. With the 3.5" setup you have to watch that you don't pinch the coolant line.

how do you think the SLP cold air box compares to this unit? I got a the SLP kit last year off someone, I bought my car home last night from storage so I will try to get the box installed this weekend.

The SLP setup is better than stock but it still sucks air through the air canister. With my CAI, my K&N can suck air all the way around so it is less restrictive then the SLP system.

yeah but the SLP is a cold air unit. Putting a open air filter anywhere in the engine compartment sucks in warmer air than the SLP setup.

Air temp. has a direct impact on power output from the engine. I would rather have the cold air any day over the warm.

Also the SLP box is very large and in no way restricts air flow...just my .02$ after putsing around with it yesterday

SLP CAI will make a difference but I knocked off 21/100 hundredths off my quarter mile time with my setup (no other mods) so I'm pretty happy with it.

i currently have the homemade pvc pipe wai. i have the SLP single CAI sitting in my garage right now waiting for install. i noticed zero improvement when i went from the throttle body mounted k&n filter to the wai i made. maybe getting less air that is cool is better than getting more air that is warm. ill report back when i install it.
