TPI on 383 Stroker re-build
Hi guys/gals,
I am just about to have a 383 stroker engine built for my 88' T/A. Does anyone have any hints or things that I might watch out for while assembling a stroker engine specifically as opposed to a regular 350? I would appreciate any help before I start.
Also, I am using my TPI fuel system from my existing engine. Will I need different injectors?

With your 383 you are going to be making a bunch more hp and tq over your previous engine. Therefore it wouldn't be a bad idea to upgrade your fuel system. For example, I too am building a 383 and have upgraded to 24 lbs SVO injectors (good for 450hp) and a AFPR and will soon be adding a high flow pump.

I also built a 383 from a 350 L98. I am using the stock 22lb injectors, but running 50 psi on the fuel rail with the vacuum hose unplugged. I tried with it on, and got a lean code. Im going to put 24lb's on soon. Other than that, it's the stock 350 tpi intake system. You will need to burn a new prom. Either you can try it yourself which there's plenty of advice on how to do it on this site, or I had street and performance burn mine, I think the price was $190, and haven't had a single problem with it yet.
I've had my stroker running since late october, and I am very pleased with it. Gas mileage is very good, close to 18 average city/highway, and torque is unbelievable. I did use a rather mild cam, went with a compucam roller cam for a 305. It produces great torque in my rpm range...1000 to 5000 rpm. I used flat top hypereutectics and still have 10.7:1 compression. 91 octane is about my minimum, and still get an occasional knock with that.
I went with a pete jackson "quiet" gear drive for late model SBC also. Everyone says don't use a gear drive on computer controlled engines, but it works just fine.
No other real advice to give. Good luck
