High RPM S/C Whine?

When i floor my 91' GTA LB9 i hear a really noticeable forced induction whine from inside the car. I have a DIY CAI with a K&N filter and ported plenum (egr walls, siemesed) and Flows. Is that normal or is something wrong. It sound like s/c whine from 3000rpm up.

Altenator maybe?

With a good cold air intake and open element you will hear a hiss of air coming in... not a whine.

Would a alternator do that? It only does it at wide open throttle though.

Where's it sound like the noise is coming from? Engine compartment, mid car, or rear? Could be that you have to much backlash in the gearset from wear, and it's spreading just enough to make noise when you mash the go pedal.

Like D Stroy H8 said, if you have a free flowing intake you'll hear air hissing into the intake because all the factory baffled crap is removed.

Other than that, I dunno. Pop the hood and rev the engine to about 3000 rpm and listen for noise.

Good luck

Never thought about that, but it does sound just like a Gear Drive timing gear.

i had the same problem... whenever i revved my engine, it would whine like if i had a s/c inside the engine. never knew what it was though... wasn't sure if it was a vacuum leak or if it was something else

backlash is the amount of air between two gears, in this case it's the ring and pinion. It has to be set to an exact spec, usually .008" to .015".
