Try harder to get the bolts out. Between a 10mm wrench and a shallow 1/4" socket you should be able to get it out without removing the runners.
If not, go buy a cheap 10mm wrench, stick it in a vice, heat it, and bend it to around 45* right near the closed end. Then you'll have plenty of room to get it out. You'll also find that this new tool works very good when trying to install or remove the tv cable bolt from the outside of your transmission.

Did you actually break the porcelean piece or just unscrew the top part of it with the wire? A socket isn't going to work so you need a small box wrench, you should be able to get at it with that without heating and bending.

I used one of those Ratcheting Wrenches on mine, worked like a charm... I started out with a open end wrench and rounded the bolts off, so I decided something else was needed. Mine wern't 10mm tho... hmm, I think they were 7/16. I also broke the ceramic thing off the EGR, but I was switching EGRs, I had another used EGR with the sensor on it.
You'll get it... It's just gonna be fun.

The runners have a bolt that goes from the opposite side, I believe it's in the back by the distributor on the drivers side, Can't really remember. Just look around the bottom of them on both sides, if you didn't get that one from the inside, then that's probably the problem.

well it turns out all i had to do was hold a little 10 mm wrench with a vice and beat it down till it bent at the right angle, i got in there without removing the runners and got the EGR off! i tested it and it is VERY hard to push the diapraghm in. does that mean that its bad? also its very dirty. thanks all!

Hard is a relative term, I know the springs on those are pretty strong, they do not move easily. If your car has alot of miles you might as well replace it while your there. Do you have a pic of the porcelean piece you broke? I actually thought I broke mine. The very top had come loose and seperated from the rest of the shaft, but looking closely, the top threads into the shaft so I think I am OK, unless its threaded in and then sealed over.

The porcelain piece that you broke is part of a sensor that is available separately. I don't think a new EGR valve comes with one, although I could be incorrect.

that is the egr temperature sensor that white stuff is only a protector of the wire just as long as the metal part of the wire goes down inside the bolt it should be fine....be sure to check the type of egr valve there are 3 types negative pressure positive pressure and universal.....if you buy standard it is actually the exact one produced by gm (rochester) but standard buys them and puts them in a new box.....to figure out what type of egr you have after all the numbers there is a letter N or negative, P for positive or no letter . make sure it is correct or it will not match....and to get the runners off you have to remove the valve covers and there is a hidden bolt. on the very bottom.... AND REPLACE THE GASKETS might as well remove the runners your this far and the gasket comes as a whole set... lower and upper. plenium and throttle body.
