No power past half throttle

The car idles okay, and drives fine. Until you mash the gas past halfway. Then it just stops. The nose dives down and everything gets quiet. Then it sputters up and starts to go again. Only with little power. Nothing like normal. This started yesterday on my way home from work. Today I changed my oil and filter, not because of the problem though , checked my plugs and dist cap. I changed the wires last night. Still has the same problems. I don't know where to even start this time. Thanks for any help.

It sounds like the fuel filter or pump on its way out.

The pump is fairly new, but I haven't done anything with the filter yet. Maybe that will be tomorrow's project. Thanks for the lead.

I just changed the filter. It still has the same problem. It runs and idles good, until you mash the gas past halfway. I don't know what to change next!

That doesn't mean you don't have any codes.

I checked the codes stored in the computer. I got a code 21. TPS not adjusted or faulty. I adjusted it to specs. It does everything it is supposed to do, goes past 4 volts at WOT and goes up and down gradually. I still have the same problem though. I don't know. Any other ideas?

How does the engine sound? At idle, reving, and driving. Any odd noises? Also do you have access to a scanner?

I don't have access to a scanner. Everything sounds like normal. It idles, and runs okay. It will rev past 3000RPM too. But if you get on it hard, It doesn't even have to be real hard, it is like you hit a wall. Sometimes if you are going, and floor it, it bogs down, then starts to pick up again. Nothing like normal though. I was thinking it was something in the computer. I just don't know. Thanks for the help though.

Well, it launches real hard for about a second then the nose dives and there is just silence from the engine for about a second then it surges up so fast it spins the wheels. It just surges up and down like that. It is like I jump on it and then get off of it and back on it. Like someone who has never driven a stick might take off.

My problem sounds like the opposite of this one, I can hardly get my car off the line it feels dead upto about 3000rpm then it seems to work ok. I'm thinking it's maybe filling one of the cylinders with too much fuel?

I was almost out of gas today, so I filled up on my way home. I put in the premium this time. 14.74 gallons of it. Then added some fuel injector cleaner. It is running worse now than ever. It wouldn't even start at the fuel pump. I finally got it to run, but if you mash the gas, it dies. I mean, I had to drive home the rest of the way practically resting my foot on the throttle. Any more and it starts sputtering and dies. I don't know

Check all Grounds. I had a similar problem Until I ran a Braid Ground Strap From the Firewall To the back of the passanger head.

Get a Ohm Meter and check Injectors.
Test Ignition Module
Test Coil
How does the rotor button in the distrubutor cap look.
Clean and adjust and test IAC

Just my .02

I remember putting the braided ground on the head when I installed the engine. I just replaced the ignition module receintly. The rotor in the dist cap looks good and so does the cap. I'm going to get another coil and some new plugs. I'll check the IAC, TPS, and timing again. And I'll look for some grounds.
By the way, my gas gauge was on the fritz for a couple weeks. Always reading full. Well, It seems to be working now. I don't know if there is a connection, but I thought I would mention it. I'm grasping at straws now!

I just checked them with a meter. I don't think I did it right though. I touched both blades off the injector with the meter leads. I was getting around 17.4 on all of them. I looked for bad grounds or wires cut/not connected, and didn't find anything out of the ordinary.

After driving it around more, it doesn't seem to be as bad in the mornings when it is cool. But if it is hot outside, man it is bad. The only thing I can think is that it is some kind of vapor lock. The #7 header tube is close to the fuel lines. The fuel lines were too hot to touch when I got home today. I haven't done anything to that area since I put in the motor. Does anyone know how I can test this? When I start it while it is hot, I am smelling gas, so I don't even know if I'm heading in the right direction.
Thanks again

I just replaced the tps. That didn't do anything. While I was driving, I just floored it and held it down. It starts to accellerate, then just stops. Everything stops. Kinda like I lost all electrical power. it just gets real quit. It doesn't matter what RPM I'm at. Just when the pedal goes more than half. I'm running out of options. I'm planning on getting new injectors and chip burning stuff, but I still have to drive it. Even if it isn't perfect. I just need it running.
Thanks for any sujestions.

I've been having the same symtoms with my car. It takes a nose dive when you mash the throttle then picks up.

I unpugged the MAF and no nose dive just crazy lowend burn out power. I'm going to check all the sensors and maybe replace the MAF.

Regards,
G

I just went out and unplugged my MAF and went for a ride. Man that thing hauls butt now. Thanks for the help. I guess I need to replace my MAF too. At least it is running like normal. Actually it is running better now. Thanks again,
FBird.
Now, does anyone know where to get a good MAF?

I haven't actually replaced mine yet. It is coming though. I might have to wait a week or two. This one came at a bad time. You know how that is though.

Throttle Position Sensor. Check for smooth voltage increase, if you open the throttle slowly and the voltage jumps, or fades in and out the sensor is bad, or connections.

TPS= Throttle Position Sensor.

I'm pretty sure it is the MAF. We sill see when I get a new one.
Thanks anyway,
