What is the differance between 87 and later cams vs. 87 and earlier cams

The early cams were flat tappets (the lifters) 87+ were roller cams, used roller lifters.

it is a little more difficult to find a "made for tpi" cam with a flat tappet motor. most of them are made for the 87+ roller engines.

ok well my car is a 86, and i found a cam that i like, but it is for 87 and earlier motor which i do not have, would that make a differance?

Uhh...'86 is earlier than '87...maybe you meant '87 and later?
