TPI wiring harness question....

Is the wiring harness the same for a 305TPI and a 350TPI?

The motor has nothing to do with which cable it has. It depends on which ECM is in the car. The cables for the '870, '165, and '730 are different.

It is a well known fact that the cables for the '870, '165, & 730 ECM's are different. However I don't believe that is the question that is being asked here. From reading his post it appears that he is asking if the 305 TPI and 350 TPI engines use the same wiring harness for a particular vehicle. Say like in an engine swap from a 305 to a 350 in the same car. The answer is basically yes.

That's why I started off by saying the motor has nothing to do with the cable. It's all about the ECM type.

Actually the motor does have something to do with the type harness used. You wouldn't expect to put a TPI engine in and use a TBI or Carbed harness would you. Or maybe drop a V8 into a V6 without changing the wire harness now would you?

Trickster, you're killing me here. We are comparing a 305TPI to a 350TPI. These are the two motors that I am refering to. I guess I wasn't making myself clear enough.

Yes, only thing different between these two fuel injection systems was the injectors.

Just watch out the the difference between the 5 speed and the automatic harnesses. Some 305 TPI harnesses don't have the wiring for the automatic transmission.

I am a newbe, this is my first post, and sorry if this has been discussed before. I thought it would be along the same lines.

I have a 305 carb motor and am going to put a TPI setup on the car. I have the TPI setup, wiring harness, and ECM, but it came out of an automatic car and my car is a 5-speeed. Does the automatic harness have all the connectors needed for the 5-speed? The only thing I can think of that would be different is the shift lite in the dash. I really don't care if that works or not.

PROM Issues
You need to install a memcal (the part that is under the little cover on the ECM...see picture below) replaced with one from a manual car or have the prom in that memcal reprogrammed for use with a manual car.

Shift Light
If you have a 1227165 ECM (mass air), take the TAN/BLK wire from cavity A7 in the ECM connector and connect it to the F cavity of the ALDL connector (it's already going there) and to the shift light in the instrument cluster. If you have a 1227730 ECM, the TAN/BLK wire is in cavity F6. You can remove the rest of the automatic transmission wiring. There are three wires involved...two go to the ECM (including that TAN/BLK wire) and one that goes to the brake switch to disengage the torque converter when the brake pedal is depressed (purple wire). This is all optional...the car will run fine if you just leave the transmission connector tied somewhere and use the manual program in the prom.

After you are done, use a scantool to check all functions, especially whether it senses it's in gear or neutral. You may not have troubles since yours is a factory stick car. When I did the swap in my Monte, I had to put a jumper wire on the park/neutral circuit since my car was originally an auto, and converted to stick. I still need to install a clutch-safety switch; someday when I'm bored and have nothing to do.

Thanks for the help, I have a buddy that is going to burn a new chip with the manual info and help with the over all swap. I have the TunerPro Software, but don't have a stock bin file nor know which ECU file to use. I have the 1227165 ECM. I have looked at the ABUAMT.bin and APYP.bin, but the values look strange. It looks like they have been altered. I think it may be the ECU file I have been using 6Ev011.ecu. I will look in the DIY PROM section for the info.

Thanks again for the help. You guys Rock!! Later

You can drive around with the Automatic memcal in the car, seems to work fine.
I ran on my auto prom for a few weeks since I was too lazy to drop the ECM and install a custom prom.
