help with six speed tpi

Hello, I'm new here and need help. My uncle just bought an IROC, the only thing is it has a six speed trans. The previous owner said it had the motor and trans from a 2001 camaro, but when i looked under the hood it wasn't a ls1. i don't know if the motor is original, i just know it's tpi from the intake. any help on which motor it is (5.0 or 5.7) well be helpful. i know it was auto before. could it also be a late 80's corvette motor.

If i remember right the oil dipstick is on the left side (from front) on 305 motors. and the right side on 350s. If you have a pic that would help out some more.

So...you pulled the valve covers, but forgot to look at the dipstick...

When your lookin at the intake is it a short runner one? or can you see where the incoming air would leave the plenum and go out long tubes to the intake?

That is kinda funny that you took off the valve covers but forgot to look at the dipstick. LOL if you can describe the intake that would help ALOT. Or find a pic of one like it on the net and link it or somethin. your positive that it has aluminium heads?

It's not specific to displacement, it's specific to block production year. I think they changed it sometime in the late 70's early 80's.

I saw one rocker arm from where you put oil in, you could see the pin for the roller tip. the rockers looked stamped not like to those after market anodized one. it is tpi i know it from the intake. and it does have aluminum heads, unless magnets stop sticking to iron lately. According to the vin# it had a 305 tpi and was auto. some one told me you told tell from the harmonic balancer on weather its a 305 or 350, but i don't know how that works. he paid $1500 for it. well thanks again for all your help

Go under the hood, on the drivers side with a rag and a flashlight. When the head ends (near the firewall), the block continues for an inch and a half or so, and then the tranny begins. In that inch and a half, it will say either 5.0L GM or 5.7L GM. You need the rag to wipe off any dirt over the letters so you can see them. The flashlight should help read them also.
