Distributor question

Search is down, so I couldn't hunt for this question.

Are the 85 and 86 dist. different from the 87 and up? Or is it just size and the actual way they function the same?

Yes, the early TPIs had a different distributor, with an integraterd ignition coil. Later types had a divorced (separated) ignition coil and smaller cap.

To confuse matters even further, the early TPI engines used a different distributor cap and rotor than other HEI ignitions from GM. The TPI cap is lower and slightly wider:

So... can I still install a small Dist on the old system, or will it be a problem?
