305 to 350, worth it?

I have a 305 TPI but I want something that is a little more upgradeable. is it a good idea to swap it out with a 350 or should I just stay with the 305 and fix it up? The trouble is, I don't know what I can and can't bring over from the 305 to the 350 if I do the swap. can any of it be swapped over until I ge the time and money to upgrade it or not? I'm mostly curious about the intake manifold, ecm, heads and headers. Any help, thanks.

Hello,

Well the 305 to 350 swap is widely done and for you it is easy!!! I'm doing it now to my RS which is TBI not TPI so I have a whole slew of issues. Anyways...

Find a good L98 engine. I picked up a complete L98 longblock (350) for $175.00 with about 90k on it. Watch the classifieds here, they come up fairley often.

Your TPI will bolt right on to the 350. Now for the list of items you will need:

1) 22lb Injectors (Your 305 has 19lb)

2) Knock Sensor for 350 (These are different)

3) PROM for 350 (ECM is the same, just need the PROM)

THe L98 engine will drop right in with the above changes. Nothing major since you already have TPI.

Now I would get me a nice 2800 stall to really complement that L98 TPI and give you some ***** off the line.

If you have time/money you can also upgrade runners/base and get a zz4 cam (slight head mods required). Pretty much the sky (and your wallet) is the limit. Enjoy!

305 is just as upgradable as a 350. With the same cam, heads, intake, exhaust, my 305 would run circles around my 350.

I am confused by that, are you saying that a 305 with the exact same mods as a 350, will run circles around the 350?

if your going for a rebuild dont waste ur money on a 305. Its cheaper to rebuild a 350 and u'll get alot more out of it. If they both have the same mods the 350 wins everytime.

I heard that ram air intake drowns a 305, but will rock on a 350 that's true right? also are there other 350 block I can do these swaps with without much trouble? may a newer chevy 350 or a zz4?

Yeah the torque gain will be worth it. I went from a 350 to a 400 for the same reason. Torque is your friend.......

can you put tpi on a zz4 as well? is the engine really different or pretty close to the same thing?I want to be able to pull around 400 hp out of it without nitrous, supercharger, or turbo. I think it is pretty possible, I just have to make good choices on parts and such. any thoughts?

Theres no replacement for displacement. If I had a choice, I would go with the 350.

Re: 305 to 350, worth it?

I did this exact same swap, but I went from the LG4 carb engine 305 and put it on a 350. Then I put my 305 heads on the 350 and installed tpi. For the 305 tpi to work well, all you will really need to do is get an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and set fuel pressure at 46 psi. No need to buy new injectors or chip for computer. I love the swap and would recommend it to anyone. The difference between the 305 and 350 blocks is the cylinder bores. The rest can be used on either one. Also if you plan on keeping the same cam, get a block that has the bosses to the lifter retainer spider. This will be very important for the roller cam. L98 block will do you well. Good luck!

Re: 305 to 350, worth it?

I was one of those guys who did not want to get rid of the 305

I built it three times and no matter what I did it came apart at 6k+

I went to a 350 and now all my 305 blocks are at the yard

you can use the 305 heads if you like the carbite bit

Sounds like a personal problem or a failed build, not the 305s fault. I have seen plenty of 305s turn 7,200+ RPM RELIABLY. You need to get rid of the TINY factory rods and weak cast crank that came stock in so many of these 305s.

Re: 305 to 350, worth it?

305 Engines are more expensive to build, with less outcome. The 350 Chevy's are quite possibly the cheapest motors to build. Pistions for a 305 are $50+ more then a set of 350 chevy pistons.

Most of this is due to a far lower volume of people willing to spend money on their 305 in comparison to the people who have money to spend on a 350.

Re: 305 to 350, worth it?

I did a lot of things to my 305 that's in my car now. But everything Ive done.....I can swap to a 350. So if you want to start small, buy stuff for the 305. When you get a 350 built....start swapping things over. I'm waiting for my 305 to go. I have a 350 TPI ready to go. I'm not swapping yet. This 305 runs to damn good!!
14.8 in the 1/4 mile. no stall, street tires, full stereo system still in the car, with a 180 lb. passenger, and 3/4's of a tank of gas!
Like ppl are saying though....its not worth building a 305 (going .030 over ect.)
Its cheaper to buy a 350 motor....and then start buying things for it.
Pistons, rods, crank, ect.
305's are good motors.....just 350's are just that much better.
