Gas Mileage

Hey I just bought a 1989 Trans Am GTA with 145,000 miles on the body and 45000 miles on the new 350 engine and transmission. When i first bought it i did the usual stuff, burning out and driving hard and got 9 mpg on a completely stock motor. I tried easing up on the gas and driving it nicely and got 11 mpg. Is this gas mileage normal on a stock 350. Also when i first start it up the exhaust smells a lot like gas. What kind of gas mileage does a stock 350 usually get and has anyone else had this problem?

Engine: all 225+ RWHP
Transmission: all OD
Axle/Gears: Always the good ones
15-18 in town

and 22-25 on the highway seems to be a good avg for non abusive owners.

11 or even 9 unless sustained wot is pathetic and something is dearly out of whack. Try doing a full tune up and/or getting the car on a computer to see what is wrong.

Any trouble codes or check engine lite on?

Reman motor have some kind of honking camshaft in it?

Massive vacuum leaks?

PAthetic past maintenance?

Leaking injectors?

Bad coolant temp sensor?

Bad mass air flow sensor?

I could go on and on.

something is not right so start with the basics and work your way from there?

later

ya i figured 9 or 11 mpg. was pretty bad, i have had a "check engine soon" light that comes on every once in a while and will stay on but then will go away for at least a couple days. Im going to get it to a mechanic as soon as i save up some cash and see whats up?
