is this timing chain gonna be any good?

So me n my friend went down to the local parts shop today to pick up some stuff. I was gonna get a comp timing set and they didnt have it in stock. Their computers were down today so they couldn't order any parts in. So the guy recommended I try one by Crane. Blue racer wg801, it only cost like 30 bucks for the set which is well pretty damn cheap...

Anyways, I can't find it on summit. I found it listed on Jegs, and according to jegs, the part is only for up until 87. I have an 88. I looked through the crane site and couldn't find any info on it at all, only a picture. Has anyone used one of these before? Is it a decent piece or should I return it and order a something else. Will the thing even work on my car since it is only supposed to be good up until 87?

Thanks

That's odd, should be listed as 86-down or 87-up...you want one for the factory roller cam you have which should be listed in '87-up.

I just looked at Jegs site, I see what you mean.

They do have a toll free number, but may not be open today because of holiday, but worth a shot to call.

well my primary question question i'm trying to figure out if this is a quality piece or not. Wow. I didn't even know it was a holiday down there. I live in Canada.

I'm kinda wandering about the product abit since I can't even find any info about it really on crane's own site.

Return it. It's a non-roller set. Blue Racer was acquired by Crane a while back, I think 10 years or so.

any suggestions on what to get? I've heard that Cloyes are excellent, but I looked at the edelbrock site and it says that mose of their cloyes sets arnt street legal except for 3 of them. will one of those 3 work on our cars? If not, I was thinking about getting a comp cams magnum double roller timing set. What should I order? Thanks

The comp cams one is fine, and I would probably lean towards that. Really, or you can just get a cheapo non-roller cloyes replacement, $20? Street legal timing chain? I don't think anyone is going to pop your timing cover just to pass you for smog.

The GMPP single roller chain is also good, but perhaps a bit on the heavy side. It comes in at $40 or so from your typical discount dealers. 12371043. It's what is used on the ZZ4 crates.

Blue Racer (camshaft) was recommended to me (before they were bought out) by a guy I respected as a "real" engine builder, and I have/had no problems with it. At the time, they were the only ones that had the grind I wanted in an off the shelf cam, and the lifetime warranty was nice too, as the cam was no more expensive than anyone elses.

Sure...but he needs a timing set for a factory roller setup. Blue Racer does not fit the bill.

whats the difference between factory roller and whatever the blue racer one is designed for? My knowledge of cams and valvetrains is kind of lacking.

In regards to the comp sets, is there that much difference between the Magnum and the High-tech sets? I couldn't really figure out the difference from lookin at comp's site.

The crank gear is different between the factory hydraulic roller setup and the factory flat tappet setup. I don't know what the differences are between the 2 comp cams sets.

Ok, so back to the shop I go, return it. They give me edelbrock set 7800. My friend thinks it might not be the right set for my car though. I'm not sure, as he knows much more about third gens than I do. Will this chain work?

"Not applicable to OEM Chevrolet hydraulic roller-lifter camshaft equipped engines."

Time to throw the book at the guys giving you parts. They arent giving you what you need.

This is THE performance store in town. This is the one the majority go to. Maybe they just don't know their thirdgens to well. Bloody hell. So is it the 7801 I need I'm assuming?

Yes.

These guys suck. Tell them you need a chain for a GM ROLLER block, not flat tappet. 1987+ GM block, not a 1955+ GM block. Repeat...ROLLER. Maybe if you tell them 3+ times in 3+ sentences they'll get the message. I learned that in business minor when studying advertisements.

7801 is the one to get.

Code:
V8 262, 265, 267, 283, 302, 305, 307, 327, 350, 400 1955-95 #7800* (A) #7844
V8 305, 350 1987-95 #7801* (B) —

(A) Not applicable to OEM Chevrolet and Chrysler hydraulic roller-lifter camshaft equipped engines.

(B) For OEM hydraulic roller lifter cams only.
