IAC part number changes from year to year - which to use?

Ok first off I work for Advance Auto. These listings are what I come up with at work, so it's possible another parts house might show something different.

So on to my question. Does anyone know the difference between these two TPI IAC part numbers. Both are GP Sorensen #'s.

1986 to 1988 lists part # 779-10003.
1989 lists part # 779-10018.

I don't have either in stock to compare them to each other. I'm wondering if it's something as stupid as the connector being different, or something more complicated such as the step counts somehow working differently.

My problem is I have no idea which one to order because my car is such a frankenstein.

I'm running the '89 bin file, but my ECM wiring harness is from an '86. This is of course for my '87 Camaro with the '92 engine block, lol.

Might have to do with the TB you're using? 89-92 vs '86-88?

Just a thought

I hadn't thought of that. I suppose I'll order both in and see what's what.

i would think that you would need to use part # 779-10018 because that is what your ECM would expecting.

I was thinking that too, but 8Mike9 brought up a good point about the throttlebodies being different. I'm using one off an '86.

I was hoping someone knew the answer, but it seems I'll just have to get both in and compare them. I'll keep you guys posted in case anyone else runs into this.

Well I compared both at work today. Physically they are interchangeable. The only noticable difference is the spring. The 86-88 part has a tighter spring on it with more coils. I forgot to take my camera to work to take a side by side picture. When I get around to installing it in the next couple of days I'll take a pic of my old one next to the new one.

Well I finally got around to installing it, so here is a picture. You can clearly see the 89 unit on the right has a different spring. The car seems a lot more stable when first started, so either the old one was bad, or simply dirty, or perhaps having the 89 valve to go with my 89 PROM actually makes a difference. Anyway I thought you guys would appreciate the picture.

In the pic, it looks like the original was pretty well worn on the pintle. Hope you cleaned the passage well too.

Yeah I had the throttle body off the car, and sprayed the hell out of it with brakeclean. The passage is pretty clean now.

Re: IAC part number changes from year to year - which to use?

T-bodys maybe different but I'm fairly sure the IAC housings that bolt to the bottom of the T-bodys are the same for TPI F-cars. Vets are a bit different on the coolant tubes.
The spring difference could just be a supplier difference.
