I want to upgrade from the factory cam. I have a 1990 IROC L98 auto with very low mileage (60k). The car is pretty much bone stock.

I have a hi-flow cat-back system and a few minor mods.

I am shopping for an AS&M setup base + runners and a set of headers. These will be installed by late winter.

I have 1.6 roller rockers and LS1 springs these will be installed when I do the cam.

I want to upgrade to a better cam but don't want too much cam so I will be forced into prom tuning. But I want to get as much cam as I can.

The car is a speed density setup these can be pretty finicky with cams.

Has anyone worked with this setup? It will be AS&M intake + LTRs, headers (1 5/8s), 1.6 rockers, LS1 springs, cam-to-be-determined, factory everything else.

What cam do you suggest?

I am looking for 300 rwhp.

thx

Pretty tall order for 300RWHP and stock heads. My signature has what it took for me to reach 300rwhp. Looking to up that some with the next dyno pull and a couple of more mods.

Call Comp Cams(1-800-999-0853), they came out with a new selection of Xtreme Energy cams for fuel injection - XFI or something. They're raving them as the latest, greatest things. I don't know if anyone on here has even got one yet. Get one (Comp recommends) and be one of the first on here. Next time you'll be the guy giving people who ask this question advice or cam help. I know I'm curious about these cams, bought mine from them JUST before they released these. Wish they would have told me to wait a bit.

Just noticed in above post, 1989GTATransAm has one in his list of future mods. Depending on the timing of the both of you, he may be the guy to ask.

Yep, I have it sitting in my garage. It is a high lift cam and you need the heads and springs to support it. I was lucky in that my Trickflow heads have the dual springs and will support the cam as is. I'm having a 4-bolt short block built up now which will be bored .030 over for a 355. With any kind of luck I should be making 35 more horsepower than I have now with the mods I'm planning on including the cam listed.

Yep, 300 RWHP and stock unported heads don't belong together in the same sentence if you're running a LTR TPI. You can still run into the 12s with less than 300 RWHP though with the TPIs powerband. Cams like the GM ZZ4, TPIS ZZ9, Accel 74211, and Comp XR264 are about as large as you'll want to go if you don't want to mess with the PROM. Having said that, going the DIY PROM route is really the way to go even with the stock cam. There's potential there waiting to be unlocked.

Check out the new Comp stuff

Used a 212/218 cam in a friends car and it turned out pretty sweet as far as driveability and power are concerned

Give them a call and be honest about how u use your car.

thx for the info everyone.

I sure do not want to put the wrong cam in and foobar an excellent running car

So would you do the DIY PROM first, before an engine build up ? During? After? Is anytime a good time to start? What tools should I buy?

thx

If planning on a cam swap you will need to do your own tuning.

If u dont already, I would try learning now before anything non stock is put on the car.

It will make your learning curve immensely easier.

Start with the "tuning Guide" we have put together on the Prom board.
