My new 305 tpi
Finaly its almost done, i only need to find a new radiator.
Its a 1986 305 tpi bored 0.030 and the crank 0.010
New sealed power pistons and rings and this camshaft http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...=KeywordSearch
I used the heads from the old 305 from 1988
I also have flowtech hedders, 3.5 inch exhaust , kn filter, airfoil , bbk AFPR , ported plenum , TB coolant bypass and a custom made prom for the computer . And ofcourse transgo:S shift kit for the tranny. I cant wait to start her up.
Heres some pics

nice to see that everyone is not afraid of a 305. I am about to rebuild mine with a .060" bored over pistons. I am going to do a real high duration cam with a medium lift as well. I am going to use the LT1 heads & intake. I believe I should be making some excellent power. Keep posted on results of your set-up. If your car is running properly you should break into and probably out of the 13's easily.

I would've gone with a slightly different cam. For another $30 or so you could have gotten a CompCams XE grind.
As for that 5.0L LT1 that you plan on building...have fun with it. I absolutely loved mine for the few days I had it before I over-revved it (stock 90k mile bottom end doesn't like 6300rpm apparently
). I'll PM you about it and see if I can't help you out with anything at all.

Yeah im hopping to make some more hp , and the cam is alot better than the stock one so thats an improvement.
I hope to find a better rear end than the stock 2.73
I found a used radiator so now im almost done.

Definitely agreed that its better than the tiny stock one. Should breathe well. Nice looking motor too. I love that polished TPI setup. Looks amazing

I started the new engine yesterday and it runs great , feels very strong so now i cant wait for the summer to show up.
Blowing a motor apart at 6300 rpm is strange. I've seen several motors one a 305 and two 350s on the dyno with factory bottom end turning 6500 rpm on several occassions. I had some transmission problems on my old IROC and pegged the tach at 7000 and they all survived. Althought I will say the bearing problem was made demonstrably worse on my car after revving it to 7000rpm

We made a little movie during the first start-up attempts. So if you want to listen and look at my car visit http://www.area51.org.il/~zaphodb/IROCZ/Scania/
And download the divx.avi version it wont take that long to download it.
I think the car sounds great.

That looks awesome, I am not knocking you or any thing but what was your reasoning behind keeping the 305?? Trust me, I love my 305 I was just wondering your reasoning behind it. Also nice to see you kept your AC.

Same here, finding something bigger is hard work
Theres a 350 on e-bay atm it says "going cheap" and its already up to £1020, getting on for what i paid for my whole car.
As i'm not going drag racing the 305 is also slightly more economical, [lol 5ltr economy] and its a big motor here.
It does look like you put a lot of hard work in, and i can understand you waiting till summer, your road gritters are 10x worse than ours, it plays havoc with alloy and bodywork.

Well to be fair, you dont see them everyday, petrol costs are high for one. There are very few dealers, and they dont support the old models, so parts are never next day, like it would be with say a UK built car, etc etc if your off the road. [sometimes
] That, and its an old car to start with.
I can almost get parts for my TA delivered from the US faster than i can get spares for a Renault or Fiat, so its better than years ago.
But if you look through e-bay and Autotrader, theres always quite a few popping up, the Pontiac UK Owners is mainly made up of 2ndand 3rd gen Firebirds\Camaros.
But the fact they dont pop up round every street corner makes it nice when everyone looks twice at it.

Well a lot of younger kids point and shout "look its Knight Rider" !! [mines red but they are sort of right].
Not everybody despises them, i think maybe at Camebridge and a few other places, but people that want big engines, and solid [sometimes old fashioned] engineering really enjoy them, and looking at them.
You have to remember, a Rolls is about the largest car built here, and due to our roads, its not that big really.
So when i point out mine is the equivalent of what would be an MGB, people are quite impressed.
I would'nt mind, but most modern cars from most countries are all compacts [ie:Ford Mondeo, built for the world market] and they are all looking just like the wind tunnel says they should, i'm just glad mine is different.

I'm trying to find a 3rd gen myself and holy hell its downright impossible to find a good 90-92 IROC/z28 with the 5 speed and the 5.0 TPI and be in good condition. Been looking about a month now but hell even in nationwide searches it only returns 5 or 6 cars that "might" be worth taking a look at.
owell, hopefully in the next few months something will turn up

American cars are very popular in Sweden, and its fun to drive a "rare" car , everybody looks at you when youre out on the road.

No i removed the air thing and installed the hedders . No problem since its a pre 1989 vehicle and they dont test the emissions except for the CO . So i dont need to have a cat to pass the inspection.

I had nearly the exactly same setup in my 86 IROC, same exact cam specs, Edelbrock headers, ported plenum/matched runners, chip, etc. Main difference was mine wasn't a fresh rebuild on the motor but the tranny was fresh w/ a 2000ish stall and 3.42 gears out back.
It ran decently, pulled on a couple stockish 5.0 Stangs and a couple early 4.6l Stangs. I believe I pulled a lenght or so on a early C4 Vette one time, I assumed at the time it was a early L98 car but it could have been a crappy crossfire Vette for all I know.
I've since passed it on to my younger brother. I'm guessing 240-250hp judging by the 3+ car lenghts my new bone dead stock 94 Z28 (275hp LT1 w/ a A4 and 3.23s) pulled on it from a standing start to about 80mph. I'd figure you'll run mid 14s maybe, I don't see 13s though w/ the 2.73s especially... I was honestly hoping my old 305 would stand up a little better to my stock LT1 though.
Who knows maybe your fresh rebuild will net you slightly more power and get you some low 14s but I'm doubting it (my old IROC still runs strong), good luck though.
Did you have a particular goal you were shooting for?

I dont really have a goal with my car, just keeping it in a nice condition and of course some more power.
I hope to get some bigger runners , maybe a cold air induction and a super or mini ram. And of course a supercharger or turbo.
My tranny works really good, no sliping and the transgo shift kit really made a difference. Im also looking for another rear end something like 3.23 or what i can find. Its better than the stock 2.73.
