heads for 383
I am planning on putting a 383 with around 450fwhp and want to stay with the TPI. i just read the super rod tpi shootout and i have decided to get my stock base extrude honed and my plenum ported and buy the tpis large runners. what aftermarket heads does the stock tpi intake bolt on to. i wanted to go with vortecs but id need a new lower intake. Would the stock heads be adequate if i had them ported?
-by the way i have an LB9.

The quickest and easiest route is to get a good set of aftermarket aluminum heads. Anything between 180cc and 210cc will get you the power level you're after. If you're running an automatic trans with street gears, and running a fairly mild cam .500" lift or less then it won't hurt to error on the small side when it comes to the intake port.
In case you don't know your options, there are many including these:
Pro Topline
Trick Flow
Air Flow Research
Dart
Just browse around online and check them out, then talk to a technician before ordering. You will have some choices to make on chamber size, valve size, springs, angle-plugs, etc..
In general you will want around 65cc chambers for your 383 to run on pump gas. Going over 70cc will cost you power and mileage.
Angle plugs are generally better - the chamber design is better, and the plugs are usually easier to access.
Generally bigger valves are better, but don't go overkill on the springs. Stick with the minimum street-type spring that will suit your camshaft.
To keep things simple for the swap stick with a 23* head.

You're talking alot of power, which means alot of money. You're best bet is to get a used set if you can't swing the price of a new set.

Look for used aftermarket runners and base on ebay.
Do you also have your headers and exhaust covered?
Have you also picked the cam already?
If you're very low budget you may have to stick to iron heads.
pm sent.

450 flywheel hp is about 380 rwhp or so. i know of guys making 320ish rwhp on a custom set of chopped up SLP runners and base with ZZ9/hot cam like cams. i think a 383 would make near 350 with that same combo.
to get that outta tpi its gonna take alot of cam and tuning and absolutely good heads and fully modded TPI.
i would go nothing short of a extrude honed or fully ported out aftermarket base like TPIS or superram.
i would also have the runners done, stick to TPIS or AS&M. the semi siamesed would be nicer
as far as cam, they used a 236/242 in that article which is big for TPI. i would try a 224/230 (hell if tuned right, maybe a high 220's to 230 on the intake and 236ish on the exhaust) with ALOT of lift, close to .550 on both sides, but u MUST have heads that can flow alot at that lift. if your heads peak at .500, then .550 does little good if any at all.
its all in the tune tho.
if your on a budget, port out a set of corvette aluminum heads and add a smaller cam and just put a 100shot on it.
with out good money on heads and intake, i doubt ur gonna see anywhere near 400+hp without a poweradder

Your going with the LTR setup, which is the best for the street - torque down low - vs a Holley Stealth or Superram or Miniram. And it seems, from doing a search on here, that the Edelbrock heads are more desired for down low punch. I would think that might be a good combo, a nice match of parts to create a nice torque monster for the street. Edelbrock 6085 are centerbolt and emmissions legal, all your stock base (honed) and equipment will bolt up perfectly. The smog cops will be around everywhere in the near future.
I don't know, I'dd like to hear some opinions on this. You can get a set of Edelbrock's for $1000 or under (even check used). Edelbrock heads any good guys????

I just purchased some heads myself, and from my research eddies or ok out of the box, but do not have the capabilities of some of the other makers. I went for a set of trick flows. I got the for $1100 cad with roller rockers, so they are in your price range. And for anyone that tells you they don't flow as well as the afr's, just look at this
