305 with 265 hp?

Okay,

I am planning to get a rebuilt engine with higher output but stick to what I have a 305. Maybe eventually decide for 350.

I called one place that have been doing engines for 35 years. They can get me a 305 pumping out 325 hp for 2295 but the shipping was 340

Anyway. I said I had an 88 305 tpi. and the guy said that according to their records it is a HO engine. high output engine that year.

I then said are you sure, I have an automatic. He said it is a high output block and that I should stick to rebuilding that one in particular not some other random 305...

What do you think? that I never knew

The 305 cars with the L98 cam are considered to be high out put.

if your going to go through all that work and are really in to your car just do yourself a favor and get the 350, i rebuilt my 305 and although it's a great motor, with 9k miles on it i currently have a 350 sitting in the garage for it now.

I agree, there is no replacement for displacement.

I need to stick with original, If I plan to take the car back to europe one day Ill have to have it the way it came out of the factory so a modded 305 will not stick out upon inspection....

So, I looked around and I can have a shop pull the engine for about $550 (because ill be getting engine from them) They either rebuild mine or get another one rebuilt. Ill have a custom cam made, valv job, ported and polished heads flow matched to the headers and edelbrock intake....

Engine with mods will run for about 1,900

I want have to pay shipping as it is only a 2 hour drive to the location

I would also get all the specs to make it easier to burn a chip.

Seems good to me. Est. hp I dont know.

Heads, cam, ported intake, and headers should get you around 300 horse. See the sig.

how would a 350 stick out any more than a 305? the ONLY real difference is bore size, there are NO noticable external differences...

sorry for not being clear

Well it will look the same but for example in Sweden we have a engine serial number to go along with the chassi. So if I put in a new engine that has a serial of a 350 that can cause problems.

Then again They say if the same car came with a bigger engine you can use it but then at the same time everything else has to be the same to make it just as safe... disk brake size, if the 350 comes with disk brakes on the rear then I should add those too. etc.

Anyway I might still go ahead and do it though

There's nothing special about the engine block, its just another 305 block with presumably the factory roller lifter setup. Pretty common really.

If you are absolutely stuck with the block, change the crank and stroke that thing out. Can get it up to about 334ish cubes. See what thats going to run you and see if it fits in your budget. Good heads wont hurt at all either if you can swap the heads to something else.

I vote for the 305 stroker.

A 305 +.030 with the 3.750 stroke crank = 335ci. I personally really like the combination. its a "square' motor(3.756 bore/3.750 stroke) so basically the same bore as stroke. The 572's used-to be this way(most non-GM still are) and they worked great also. It's not a proven thing or anything, just seems to work well. - Yes, larger bore can make more hp, w/ a better head. Each motor w/ a matched head(matched to the combination) will make about the same numbers. - ther's nothing wrong w/ a 305. - as for the 350 vs 305 differences, in an f-body, 305's/350's come in the same trim(brakes, suspension, etc...) unless optioned otherwise.

the smaller bore is also more fuel efficient...
