1/8 MILE TIMES

Just ran my car in the 1/8 mile today. take a look at my sig and tell me if this is good for my mods or if it is slow. It was my first time on the track. I also had alot of wheel spin on take off.
Also, after my run, my car started to stumble and stall when i would give it some gas until i was at about 1200 rpms and then it would smoothout. it just wanted to die out when stagging until i would stall it over 1200 rpms or so.
Please give me imput.
My time is on the right side. 9.368 with a 60 ft at 2.1

Oh, this is without my computer being tuned for all of the mods. let me know what you think. i think it is really slow. thanks

i dunno something dosent seem right.... i just ran a 9.2281 @ 76.77 with my 305 5spd... with pretty much free mods and a custom air intake....with a similar 2.1 60 foot....

so im just making that statement comparing my times to yours and a somewhat lack of mods i have compared to yours.... with that 1/8 mile time i think you'd be looking at 14.5-14.6

my thoughts exactly. that is really slow for the mods that i have.
i occassionally get a code 22 and 32 when driving on hwy. i tested tps and it checks good. i know the code 32 is egr and am going to change it very soon but i dont think that is why i am so slow. maybe it is my factory air intake that is killing me. the 87 air intake on an 87 GTA really sucks. i just dont know.

Thats not a good time at all for the mods you have. I ran the times in my sig for next to nothing in $$$$. I dont know what your stumble is about but its not good. Also, on my car anyway, It would run over 220 degrees just sitting in the staging lanes. I gained a few tenths just from grounding that coolant temp sensor wire in the passeger side head. The stock 87 intake tube sucks also. My 89 had the slp cold air kit looking intake except for the cold air box. Definately make yourself a cold air intake and do away with that 87' garbage. You also need to get your 60fts down. 2.1 isnt very good. Get some good z-rated tires. You could also unhook your front swaybar for more weight transfer. I have some sfcs and lower control arm relocation brackets now and my car hooks up a lot better now. I highly recommend them. I bet i could get 1.8x 60fts now. On my timeslips ive found that roughly every .1 in the 60ft is .133 in the 1/8th. So if your 2.1 was a 1.90, you would run 9.01. Still not great though. Your combo must be restricted by your intake + other stuff. I have no experience with tuning the ecu but im sure the further away from stock you go, the more there is to be gained from tuning it. Hope you get it straightened out.

well, i went for a drive today to check the car out and it seems to me that my torq-converter is slipping or something in the transmission slipping and i also discovered torq-arm bushing has 3 big breaks in it. I also reset the computer before i went to the track because i had to take battery out to put new windshield washer tank in. maybe all of that had alot to do with my car being so slow besides being tuned for all of my mods and factory air intake. when it rains it pours.

60' time is alright, seems like your loosing some topend somewhere where you should pull a decent bit better with those headers/intake.
Deff check that tq converter and check your vaccum lines.

how many miles are on the engine?

My best is a 9.33@76.5. All that is done is headers/Y pipe. All the rest of the mods on my page are sitting in my room. 2.77 rear, and no free mods yet (air box, timing...etc)

could i be losing time with my tranny mount and torq-arm bushing being bad. if so, how much am i losing. Also, could that be why it seems almost like a slipping in the tranny when it shifts. The tranny kinda like rools into and out of the shift. it is not that firm at all. The tranny was rebuilt just before i bought the car and has about 10000 miles on it but i dont know if the guy used the same old torq-converter that was on the car or got a new one. Could be he used the same one and that is also my prob.

Please let me know if it could be just the bushings and mount cause i dont want to pay a small fortune just to have my tranny checked out and nothing be wrong with it in the first place.

Thanks for the imputs so far.

Hook up a jumper wire to lock your torque converter up. You should be able to tell if the tranny is slipping then.

how do you hook up a jumper wire. I am clueless when it comes to the tranny.

i found a few vac hoses that were collapsing under pressure. the ones that go to the T that hook up to the power steering and the miracle ball and such. I am sure that had something to do with the stumbles i was having and may be a reason i was so slow. I am going to change mount and bushing along with hoses and bring it back to the track for a run and see what happens from there. i want to get all the kinks out before i go have it tuned and that way i will have a baseline and see how much the comp tune did for the mods i have. i will post my results when i do. still, any imputs are very welcome. I am just trying to figure out all my kinks.

Some thing is defently holding you back, I have made some 9.3s and even a 9.23 on my old stock engine ( cold weather ). I had an HyperT chip and underdrive pully.

I think its the top left and top right slots on the ALDL connecter by your leg. Just hook a wire to both terminals. The tranny will lock in 2nd gear and higher.
Also, what is your timing set at? My car was stumbling on low end a little but had just a lack of power and my timing was set at only 4*btdc, must have moved when i tightened it down and i forgot to recheck it. I advanced it to 10* and it had so much more low end i could spin the tires as soon as i thought about touching the gas. Try setting yours at 10* with a timing light and the est wire disconnected. Make sure you run premium gas and listen for pings. If you get any pings, retard it a couple degrees til it goes away.

I run 8.5-8.8 1/8 mile times, depending on weather conditions, so something is definately wrong

Bone stock I ran a 9.30

I have the timing at 6* and double checked it. I did a resistance check on the injectors and all were at 17 to 17.2 ohms so that is good. I replaced hoses that were collapsing so all is good there also.
while driving today i got an egr code and a tps low voltage code and checked tps and it is set at .54 so that is good also but i dont know about the egr code. Prob need to replace that.
did a compression check and all cylinders are at 150 to 155 so that is good.
The only other things i can think of is the air intake and the tranny that is killing me along with the computer tune.
I will check the fuel pressure tommorrow to see if that could also be the culprit. I have spent about 2000 dollars on upgrades and just not seeing the gains. SDPC vortec TPI kit claims to get 300 HP on stock motor and computer. Along with that, i got headers, 1.6 rockers, ported plenum and AS&M LTR which i bought everything new so i should have well over the 300 HP they advertise with the extras but am not seeing it. Maybe it is in the computer tune. I dont want to get it tuned though till i get all the kinks out. anyway, please let me know what else i can check. thanks for the imputs

Formula350Scott:

do i use just one wire like you do when checking the codes or do i use 2 seperate wires and connect them to something else. I really need to check it. Thanks for the tips.

Well i used a metal hair pin when i tested mine. Somethings not right. Anyway, set your timing at 10* for some more power. You probably run premium gas anyway and its worth the gain. I dont think its the computer tune of the car. I mean you dont have a cam, bigger injectors, or another intake. Since you have heads and a LTR setup, its probably not that much off. Are you using the factory airbox? You at least need an open element filter. That would really be restrictive.

yes, i am running factory airbox but not for long. i am waiting on cold air from slp. i changed broken tranny mount and torq arm bushing also. when i get cold air on i will take it back to the track and post new times and go from there. thanks for all the imputs
