How to Tune and Modify SBC F.I.

First I'd like to say that I have read alot of; How To Tune and Modify Small block Chevy Fuel Injection.. and let me tell you, it is a great book. Every third gen owner needs that book.

Now here is my question. I read somewhere that if you have a adjustable fuel pressure regulator you need to undo the oxygen sensor while at the track. Is this to prevent going in closed loop mode?

When you are in full throttle you are in open loop anyway so it would not matter. I could not think off the top of my head any ideas of why they would tell you that. It will just throw a check engine light. Do they explain it in the book?

Check out the DIY-PROM board.
Look at the stickys on top for the "tuning Guide"
Read till your eyes bleed
Understanding the function of the sensors and how they interact with the fueling and spark will help you understand how and why to change many things.
AFPR will only make more fuel come out of the injectors than the ECM "thinks" it is putting out. The closed loop controls with the o2 sensor will compensate for the additional fuel and just make the injector pulse less. At WOT there are no adjustments from the o2 sensor feedback being made so I don't see why unplugging it is needed. Will just cause an error once you come out of WOT condition. Computer will go into "limp" mode and run on presets that will not be optimized for power and will probably flood the motor if the pressure is too great and the ignition is not up to the task.

It may explain. I just read it out of nowhere and was thinking.... huh?

The book tells you everything about tpi and tbi and pfi fuel injection and how it works (sensors, tuning and such)I think its essential for every third gen to have. Although this website is awesome for info, this book will give you more depth and will understand the basics of our cars more clearly. And in retrun understanding these threads on DIY PROMS much more.

Just throwing out this book to people that want to understand how their cars work and how to test, tune, modify, and diagnose.

Book?

So where did you find this book? I have been to several large book stores looking for something like that,,,seems everything is geared towards LS1's now or they start talking about foreign crap I can't seem to find anything that relates to the old tuned port stuff.
A picture of the cover would help too. I have been wanting to do my own chip burning as well, but can't find a good book on it, and I have been reading the site here until my eye's bleed and still don't have a full understanding. Larry.

Here ya go.

How to Tune and Modify Chevrolet Fuel Injection - by BEN WATSON

One thing I do want to point out to you is that ive read about half of the book and I dont notice anything on actual prom burning BUT.....reading this book will reveal a LOT of mystery in the fuel injection and will make it much easier to understand and appriciate prom burning.

There is no decent prom burning book out there.

If u want to play with that stuff u hit the DIY PROM board here.

U can beat it for all the thirdgen ecms anywhere on the net.

The stickies at top might take a long time to read and u might have to read it twice, but u will be a lot closer to understanding it when you are done.

The above referenced book is also decent as a handy quick reference guide for trouble codes and even has the factory trouble shooting steps with the codes also

later

Many thanks

Thanks for the reply, the pic of the book helps greatly, thanks for the link as well, I will get it asap. I hope it helps me understand some more as I have read most everything here, the info here is great but I am reluctant to ask questions since most people here seem a little touchy about what you ask. I will end up diving in with both feet and teaching myself I think. A book at my side will give me some piece of mind for quick referencing though. Larry.

No problem Larry! I think people are a little **** about helping people on this board as well. Not good. But the info on this board is awesome. I KNOW this book is exactly what you are looking for. Good luck!
